Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) aren't just for computers. If you set up and use a VPN on your Xbox One, you can get around location-based content lockouts. This can allow you to access Netflix content that's only available in other countries, watch region-based content like the BBC, and more.

We have three easy ways to use a VPN with your Xbox one, and we'll walk you through the entire process from start to finish.

Can You Use VPN on an Xbox One?

Xbox One consoles aren't designed for use with VPNs, so there are no VPN apps that work directly on the Xbox One. You can still protect your Xbox One with a VPN, but you have to go through a computer or a router to get things set up.

Here are your options for using a VPN with your Xbox One:

  • Windows PC: This method requires a Windows PC and a VPN that's compatible with Windows. Once you've set the VPN up on your computer, you can use it to share a VPN-protected internet connection with your Xbox One.
  • Mac: This method requires a Mac and a VPN that's compatible with MacOS. After you set the VPN up on your Mac, you can share a VPN-protected internet connection with your Xbox One.
  • Router: This method requires a VPN router. You set the VPN up directly on the router, and then every single device on your network receives the same protection.

How to Use VPN on Xbox One Through Your PC

If you have a Windows PC, you can use it to connect your Xbox One to a VPN. This method requires you to set the VPN up on your PC, and then share your PC internet connection with your Xbox One.

To use this method, you need a PC that either has two Ethernet ports, or an Ethernet port and a Wi-Fi connection. In either case, you will use a Wi-Fi connection or Ethernet port to connect your computer to the internet, and then use a separate Ethernet port to connect your computer to your Xbox One.

Here's how to connect your Xbox One to a VPN through a PC:

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable between your PC and your Xbox One.

  2. Right click the Start button on your PC, and click Settings.

  11. Select your Xbox One's Ethernet connection, and click OK.

  12. Verify that your Xbox one is connected to the internet by navigating to Settings > Network > Network settings, and select Test network connection.

How to Connect Your Xbox One to VPN Through a Mac

Macs are also capable of sharing internet connections, so it's possible to set up a VPN on your Mac and then connect your Xbox one. Using this method, your Mac will share its internet connection with your Xbox One over an Ethernet connection, and your Xbox One will receive VPN protection in that way.

To use this method, your Mac needs to have a Wi-Fi internet connection or a second Ethernet port to connect to your router or modem.

Here's how you can connect your Xbox One to a VPN through your Mac:

  1. Connect your Mac and your Xbox One with an Ethernet cable.

  2. Click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and select System Preferences > Sharing.

  3. Select Internet Sharing.

  4. Click the Share your connection from drop down menu, and select your VPN network.

  5. Click the To computers using drop down menu, and select Ethernet.

  6. Verify that your Xbox one is connected to the internet by navigating to Settings > Network > Network settings, and select Test network connection.

How to Use VPN on Xbox One Without PC

This is the easiest option, but it requires a special piece of hardware called a VPN router. VPN routers are like regular routers, in that they allow you to share an internet connection between multiple devices, but they have more processing power under the hood.

These routers are actually capable of connecting to a VPN without any outside help, so that devices like your Xbox One can use a VPN without a PC or Mac to act as the middleman.

If you have a VPN router, or you're willing to buy one, it streamlines the entire process a great deal. The exact steps will differ based on your router and your VPN service provider, but this is the general process:

  1. Log in to the control panel of your router.

  2. Follow the procedure provided by your VPN service provider for setting up a VPN router.

This process usually involves finding a tab or page called Basic, Network, or WAN Setup. Once on this page, you will enter information provided by your VPN like an IP address, subnet mask, and login information. Contact your VPN service provider for more information.

  3. Connect your Xbox One to the router via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. If you have trouble, check out our guide to Xbox One Wi-Fi problems.

  4. Verify that your Xbox one is connected to the internet by navigating to Settings > Network > Network settings, and select Test network connection.

Once connected, your Xbox One will automatically be routed through your VPN.
