The Wii is no longer Nintendo's flagship console, but this fun little system still has some gas in the tank. In addition to all of the great games released for the Wii, Nintendo also made a number of apps available for the system. These apps are referred to as channels, and they're the reason you can watch Netflix on your Wii.

How to Add the Netflix Channel on Your Wii

The Wii doesn't have as many useful apps as its successors, the Wii U and Switch, but it does have both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The Netflix channel is free, so if you have a Netflix account, all you have to do is download it, log in, and start watching.

  1. From the main Wii home menu, select the Wii Shop Channel.
  2. Select Start.
  3. Select Start Shopping.

Using a Wii to Watch High Definition Content

Unlike its contemporary competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii doesn't have an HDMI port, meaning you can't use it to watch 1080p content. In fact, the default A/V cable that came with the Wii is only capable of outputting a 480i video signal.

If you connect your Wii with an optional component cable, you can output a 480p signal. However, you still won't be able to watch high definition content, because the Wii hardware simply isn't cable of outputting video in 720p or 1080p.

If your television is good at upscaling low definition content, the picture will look a lot better than if your television isn't good at scaling.
