All Chromebooks feature built-in support for typing emoticons. Here are three ways to use emoticons on your Chromebook.

How to Use Emojis on Chromebook

To use the emoji keyboard on Chromebook, you must first enable input options on the Chrome OS shelf:

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

    If you don't see the Chrome OS shelf, tap or click in the bottom-right corner of the screen to bring it up.

  2. Select the Settings gear in the pop-up window to open your Chromebook Settings.

  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and select Advanced.

  4. Scroll down the page again and select Languages and Input.

  5. Again, scroll down the page and select the toggle switch next to Show input options on the shelf to enable it.

  6. Close the settings and select US in the shelf to bring up the input options.

    If your keyboard layout is set to a language other than U.S. English, the input options icon will show different letters.

  7. Select the smiley icon to bring up the emoji keyboard.

  8. You can now choose from hundreds of built-in emoticons. Tap or click the symbols in the bottom row to browse the different categories, then select the keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner to minimize the emoji keyboard when you're done.

Leave the emoji keyboard open when using chat applications like WhatsApp so that you have easy access to emoticons.

How to Use the On-Screen Chromebook Keyboard

You can also use the on-screen keyboard to access emojis on Chromebook:

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

  2. Select the Settings gear in the pop-up window to open your Chromebook settings.

  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the settings page and select Advanced.

  4. Scroll down and select Manage accessibility features under Accessibility.

  5. Scroll down to the Keyboard and text input section and select the toggle switch next to Enable on-screen keyboard.

  6. Close the settings and select the keyboard icon in the shelf to bring up the keyboard.

  7. Select the smiley icon in the bottom row to switch to the emoji keyboard.

You can also download the Chrome emoji keyboard as a Chrome extension. The web-based version includes even more emoticons and a search feature that makes it easier to find the right one for the emotion you want to convey.
