iPhone Spotify App: Are You Getting The Best Sound?

If you regularly use the iOS Spotify app on your iPhone then you'll know how useful it can be for streaming music on the move. Whether you're a premium subscriber or listen for free, the app makes it easy to connect to Spotify's music service and use its core features.

However, are you getting the best music listening experience using the app's default settings?

If you've never touched the settings menu before, then there's a good chance you can boost the quality of the audio you stream. What's more, if you also use Spotify's offline mode to listen to music when there's no Internet connection, then you can also enhance the audio quality of downloaded songs too.

To find out the exact settings to tweak, run the Spotify app on your iPhone and follow the steps below.

Boosting Audio Quality When Streaming And Downloading

  1. With the Spotify app running, tap the menu icon (image of 3 horizontal bars) near the top left-hand corner of the screen. From the list, tap on the Settings option.
  2. You should now see a list of options in the Settings menu. Tap on the Music Quality option.
  3. To change the audio quality of songs that stream to your iPhone, locate the Stream Quality section. Here you will see three settings to choose from. As well as the default Normal setting, you also have the choice of High and Extreme. By default, music is streamed at a bitrate of 96 Kbps (Normal), but you can increase this to either 160 Kbps (High) or the full 320 Kbps (Extreme). If you aren't a Premium subscriber, then you'll only be able to choose the High setting.
  1. If you are a Spotify premium subscriber you can also improve the quality of downloaded songs when using the Offline mode. In the same menu as in step 3 above, you'll also see a Sync Quality section. Here you can choose the audio quality of the downloaded songs stored on your iPhone. Just like in step 3 above, choose either High or Extreme for better quality downloads.
  1. When done, tap on the back-arrow icon in the top left-hand corner on the screen. This will get you back to the main settings options.

Enhance Overall Playback Using The EQ Tool

Another way of improving the quality of music played via the Spotify app is to use the built-in equalizer tool. Currently this feature has over 20 presets covering different types of music genres and frequency configurations. You can also manually tweak the graphic EQ to get the best sound for your particular listening environment.

  1. From the Settings menu, tap on the Playback option.
  2. Scroll the screen down using your finger and tap on the Equalizer option.
  3. Enable the equalizer by tapping the On button.
  4. To select a preset, scroll down the list and tap on one.
  5. If you want a custom equalizer setting then use your finger on the graphic equalizer dots to adjust individual frequency bands (up or down).
  6. When you're done, tap on the back-arrow icon to return to the settings menu.

  • Keep in mind that if you are connecting to Spotify via a cellular network (rather than your Home's Wi-Fi connection for example), then choosing a higher stream quality could potentially cost you a lot more because of the increased data usage.
  • Remember that increasing the Sync Quality setting will make downloaded files larger and therefore more storage space will be required on your iDevice.
  • When adjusting the equalizer, it's a good idea to have a song playing in the background so you can hear in real-time what effect you changes make.
