Minecraft seems like a game with nearly infinite possibilities, and you open up even more of them with Command Blocks. Learn when and how you can obtain these handy little items, and what they can do for your creative worlds.

How to Get a Command Blocks

Command Blocks cannot be crafted or found through normal means in Minecraft. They are only found using Cheat commands, and therefore are used only in custom, creative worlds.

Here's how to add one to your inventory:

  1. Cheats are enabled by default in a Creative world. To make sure they're enabled, look at the information on the Select World page before joining a world. You will see the word "Cheats" if they're enabled.

Survival worlds have Cheats disabled. Command Blocks are only available in Creative Worlds.

  2. Make sure you have free space in your inventory. The cheat will only make the Command Block appear if you have a free space in your inventory for it.

  3. Open the Chat window using either the Chat button or the Command button.

  4. If you pressed the Chat button, type the following command:

    /give <your username> command_block

If you opened the dialogue box with the Command key, the slash at the beginning will be entered automatically.

  5. The Command Block will appear in the first free spot in your inventory.

What Can a Command Block Do?

Essentially, the Command Block can trigger a virtually limitless number of things in Minecraft. Once the Block is placed and powered using Redstone Circuits, press the Use Item key when facing the block to open a new dialogue box. You'll then be able to enter a new command that will trigger every time the Command Block is activated.

Since Command Blocks are cheats, they allow you to trigger all manner of commands inaccessible through normal gameplay.

Once the Command Block is placed, you'll need to set up up some way to activate it, be it a pressure plate, lever, or switch. Every time it's triggered, it will execute whatever command you added to the Command Block.

Once you've started practicing and getting the hang of how to use Command Blocks, you'll be able to enable a Command Block to power other connected Command Blocks, thereby starting chain reactions for all manner of intricate systems. Have fun!
