How to Embed a YouTube Video in PowerPoint

Find any video you like on YouTube and share it in your presentation

Calling in an expert always helps lend credibility to the information you’re sharing, and you can use the same principle with your PowerPoint presentations by embedding a YouTube video in one or more of the slides. Use this method to demonstrate something you wouldn’t be able to otherwise, break up your talk, or add more depth using another person’s point of view.

PowerPoint allows you to embed videos into your presentation from YouTube, or from a file on your computer. Use these steps to embed a YouTube video in PowerPoint.

How to Embed a YouTube Video in PowerPoint on Windows

The following instructions are for PowerPoint 2016, 2013, Office 365, and Online:

You can no longer play embedded videos in PowerPoint 2010. If possible, upgrade to a newer version of PowerPoint. Or, if you’re comfortable installing software on your computer, install the LiveWeb add-in.

  1. Go to YouTube and navigate to the video you want to include in your PowerPoint presentation.

    You can only embed one video at a time.

  2. Under the video screen, select Share.

  3. In the dialog box, under Share a link, select Embed.

    Click Embed to get the code you need to paste into PowerPoint.
  4. In the Embed Video dialog box, select the iframe code, then right-click.

    The iframe code will look something like this:

    Select the entire iframe code, then copy it.
  5. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide where you want to embed the YouTube video.

  6. Select the Insert tab. Within the Media group, go to Video > Online Video.

  7. In the Insert Video dialog box, find the From a Video Embed Code section, then paste the iframe code you copied from YouTube. Then select the Insert arrow.

  8. A video frame will appear on your slide.

    You can move the object around and resize it on your slide.

  9. To preview the video, right-click within it, select Preview, then select Play.

    Remember, your video is still online, and you must be connected to the internet to view it.

  10. To see the video in your presentation, go to the Start Slide Show group, select the Slide Show tab, then select From Beginning.

  11. To play the video during your presentation, be sure you have an internet connection. When the slide appears with the video on it, simply select Play.

To have the video play automatically when the slide appears, select within the video frame. Then, on the Playback tab, in the Video Options group, select Automatically from the Start menu. Within this group, you can choose other playback options as well.

Alternatively, you can start with PowerPoint and use the following process:

  1. Navigate to the slide where you want to place the video.

  2. From the Insert tab, in the Media group, select Video > Online Video.

  3. In the YouTube section, type a video name or description into the search bar, then select Search.

  4. On the next screen, select the video you want and select Insert.

  5. A video frame will appear in your slide.

  6. Follow steps 9-11 above.

How to Embed a YouTube Video in PowerPoint on Mac

The following instructions apply to PowerPoint for Office 365 for Mac:

You must be an Office 365 subscriber to use this method. 

  1. On YouTube, navigate to the video you want to use.

  2. In the address bar, highlight the URL and press Ctrl+C (copy) on your keyboard.

  3. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide where you want to place the video.

  4. In the Insert tab, in the Media group, click Video > Online Movie.

  5. In the dialog box, paste the URL by pressing Ctrl+V on your keyboard.

  6. Click Insert. A video frame will appear on the slide.

  7. To preview the video, click Play at the top of the frame.
