Streaming videos to your iPhone from YouTube makes sense most of the time. You don't have to worry about running out of storage space or face the prospect of deleting a heap of old videos after they've lost their appeal. However, sometimes you may want to download videos for offline viewing so you can watch them when it's more convenient.

At one time, there were many iOS apps that could download video from YouTube to your iOS device including Video Downloader and Video Downloader Browser. However, Google added restrictions that prevent these applications from working with YouTube.

Although you can try to download videos to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from YouTube using one of the general video download apps in the App Store, you are unlikely to be successful—at least if Google has anything to say about it.

The only sure-fire method of downloading YouTube videos to your iPhone or iPad is to use YouTube Red.

Download Videos Using YouTube Red

YouTube Red is a monthly subscription service from YouTube that removes the ads from all the videos that you watch on the site with the exception of paid content and movie rentals. Among other YouTube Red features is the ability to download YouTube videos to your iOS device where you can watch them offline for 30 days.

If you already have a Google Play Music subscription, you already have a YouTube Red subscription. The reverse is true. If you subscribe to YouTube Red, you also receive a Google Play Music subscription. If you don't have a subscription, you can sign up for a one-month free trial and download content. Here's how.

  1. Download the YouTube app to your iOS device—iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Open the YouTube app and locate the video you want to download.
  3. Click the Download button that appears under the video to open a YouTube Red window.
  4. Under Download this video with YouTube Red, select the resolution you want to download the video in. There may only be one resolution.
  5. Click Try It Free at the bottom of the screen if you don't have a YouTube Red subscription. The next screen informs you that you have a one-month free trial to YouTube Red, which allows you to download YouTube videos to your iOS device. It also notifies you that after that one-month trial, you will automatically be charged a monthly fee until you cancel the service, which you can do at any time.

When downloading content from the internet, remember to stay on the right side of the law. You should respect copyrights at all times and only download videos for your personal use.
