How to Change Your Facebook Password

It's easy to change or reset your Facebook password

Whether you suspect that someone has gained unauthorized access to your Facebook account or you simply forgot your Facebook password so you can't sign in, you can reset your password easily within a few minutes by following a few simple steps.

You can reset your Facebook both from and from the official Facebook app for iOS and Android. Instructions are provided for both below, with screenshots shown only for the web version.

Change Your Facebook Password from Facebook Account Settings

If you're already signed into your Facebook account, or if you're able to sign in and just want to change your password, these steps will help you get the job done.

Has your Facebook account been hacked? You might be able to recover your Facebook account if you take a few steps to get things cleared up.

  1. From, while signed into your account, select the down arrow in the top right corner, then select Settings.

    From the app, tap the menu icon from the top menu (Android) or bottom menu (iOS), then scroll down to tap Settings & Privacy > Settings.

  3. Under the Login section, select Change password.

    Facebook will ask you to enter your current password in order to change it to a new one. If you're logged in and can't remember your current password, you can select Forgot your password? beneath the password fields to reset your password by using your email address or phone number to receive a verification code.

  4. Enter your current password, a new password, then re-type of your new password into the given fields. When finished, select Save Changes.

It's recommended you immediately save your new password somewhere safe, like in a password manager.

Change Your Facebook Password If You Forgot Your Password

If you're unable to sign into Facebook at all because you've forgotten your password, then you'll need to follow a slightly different process. Instead of the instructions above, try this:

  1. Navigate to in a web browser or open the Facebook app on your mobile device. Try to sign into your account with your email address and any password you think you can remember.

    If your login details are incorrect, you obviously won't be able to access your account.

  2. Don't navigate away form the page or the app. Instead, select Forgot Password? beneath the login fields.

  3. Depending on the accounts/information you have associated with your Facebook account, you'll be asked to reset your password using any of the following three methods:

    • Verification via your Google account (using Gmail)
    • Verification via an email address
    • Verification via a phone number

    If you choose to reset your password using your phone number, you won't be able to do so if you have two-factor authentication enabled and want to use the same phone number. Facebook enforces this for security reasons, so you'll either need to use a different phone number or an email address.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions based on whichever method you chose to complete the verification process, then enter your new Facebook password into the given fields and select Continue.

    Depending on the method you choose, you might receive a text or email message with a code that you must enter into Facebook for verification purposes.

  5. Immediately save your new password somewhere safe. Any of the best password managers can be a great solution for storing your password.

What If You Can't Access Your Phone Number or Email for Your Facebook Account?

If you can no longer access the phone number or email address that you currently have associated with your Facebook account, Facebook suggests a few different things you can try to regain access:
