What to Know

  • FlickType: Type message with keyboard, press "+" to access numbers or symbols. Select Send > choose contact.

This article explains how to use a keyboard on your Apple Watch instead of Scribble. While this currently requires you to install a third-party app on your Watch, there are a couple of free keyboards that work great.

Use FlickType on Apple Watch

Once you install FlickType for Apple Watch, open the app on your Watch and give it a try.

  1. Type your message using the keyboard. If you want to use numbers or symbols, select the plus sign on the lower left side and pick one of those keyboards. To switch back, select ABC. Use the the arrow on the bottom right to backspace.

  2. When you finish typing your message, select Send on the top left.

  3. A new text message window will open with your message populated. Complete the process by selecting a contact at the top and then send the message on its way.

FlickType Features

FlickType offers some terrific features and settings. Open the app on your iPhone, make sure Watch Keyboard is selected at the top, and select the gear icon to open the settings.

  • Choose a Theme: This will allow you to give the keyboard a different color for a more personal look.
  • Enable auto-correction: Auto-correction will spot and fix your typing mistakes as you make them. 
  • Turn on Slide to Type: For when you'd prefer to use a swipe keyboard.
  • Create a Custom Dictionary: This will help with specific words that you type often.
  • Select your favorite contact: Which will make messaging your friends and family quicker.

Select Done when you finish, and your changes will apply to the app on your Apple Watch immediately.

Use WatchKey on Apple Watch

After you install WatchKey for Apple Watch, open it on your Apple Watch and get ready to type. If you see an ad for the premium version that you want to dismiss for the moment, select the X on the top left of it.

  1. Type your message using the keyboard. Select 123 for the numeric keyboard and ABC to return to letters. Use the arrow on the top left for a caps lock and the X on the top right to backspace.

  2. When you complete your message, select Send on the bottom right.

  3. A new text message window will open with your message ready to go. Finish by selecting a contact at the top and then send the message.

WatchKey Features

Like FlickType, WatchKey has several settings you can adjust and features you can check out. Open the app on your iPhone to view the following options.

  • Check the tutorials: Watch a helpful tutorial with tips on the Home tab.
  • Add Short Text: To use abbreviations as shorthand to generate full text.
  • Browse through fonts: Choose a different Font, with over 60 styles to give your keyboard a more personal look.
  • Read through FAQs: Access assistance using the gear icon.

You can simply close the app when you finish. Any changes will apply to the app on your Apple Watch instantly.

WatchKey features and options.

Scribble is a nice feature for drawing letters, but it’s not for everyone. If you prefer to type your text messages on Apple Watch, hopefully one of these keyboard apps is one you’ll love.

  • How do I change keyboards on my Apple Watch?

    On an Apple Watch 7 or newer, select the text field to pull up the QWERTY and Quickpath keyboard. Swipe up from the bottom of the Apple Watch face, then select the Keyboard button to switch to the Scribble keyboard.

  • How do I turn off Apple Watch keyboard input notifications?

    Make sure your iPhone is using iOS 15.1 or newer, then open Settings > Notifications. Select Apple Watch Keyboard, then turn off Allow Notifications.
