iTunes Match: Canceling Before Your Subscription Renews

If you want to stop using iTunes Match what's the best way to do it?

iTunes Match is a useful service for storing all your songs in iCloud. Even digital music which hasn't come from the iTunes Store can be uploaded and made available to all your iDevices. If you currently use this Apple service then you'll know that it isn't free. You have to pay a yearly subscription in order to keep using it. This might be OK if you make good use of it, but what if you want to cancel because you don't use it all that much, or have found an alternative?

In this guide we'll first cover what to consider before canceling iTunes Match and then move on to how you actually stop any further subscription payments.

Will All my Music Still be Downloadeable From iCloud?

You may think that once your music has been uploaded to iCloud (via iTunes Match) it will still be there when you cancel. After all, don't Apple give you iCloud for free anyway? This may be true, but only songs you've purchased from the iTunes Store will remain in iCloud after you've canceled.

If you've used a mix of music download services to build up your iTunes song library then you'll need to make sure they are still backed up somewhere -- like on your computer, external hard drive, etc. Therefore it is critical to download any music that you haven't backed up yet before canceling your iTunes Match subscription.

Stopping Your iTunes Match Subscription

Now that you have made sure all your non-iTunes Store music is safely backed up somewhere away from iCloud, it's time to stop using iTunes Match.

But, what's the best way to do it?

The most straightforward way to ensure you don't pay any more money is to disable the auto-renew option. Doing it this way will allow you to use the remainder of your subscription until the next billing cycle. By default this auto-renew option is enabled, but it's easy to turn off when you know where to look.

Disabling From iTunes

  1. Click the Store menu tab at the top of the screen and choose Sign In. If the menu tabs are hidden, then hold down the [CTRL] key and press B.
  2. Type in your login information (Apple ID and password) and then click the Sign In button.
  3. Click the Store menu tab and choose View My Account.
  4. Go to the section called iTunes in The Cloud and click the Auto-renew option next to iTunes Match to disable this feature.

Disabling From iOS

  1. On your device's home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  2. In the settings menu tap iTunes & App Store.
  3. There's a good chance at this stage that you are already signed into your account. But, if not, tap the password field (your Apple ID should already be filled in), enter your password, and tap Sign In.
  4. Tap your Apple ID and choose the View Apple ID option.
  5. Locate the iTunes in The Cloud section. Tap the slider next to iTunes Match Renewal to disable this option.
  6. Tap Done to save the changes.
