Why Learning How to Block Users on Facebook Chat Is a Valuable Skill

Learning how to block Facebook Chat contacts is not only a skill worth knowing, it can also save you a lot of headaches later. Since updating their Facebook Messages inbox to include live and archived chat history, users who send a private message may now be prompted to continue a conversation in Facebook Chat.

The problem is, if you are mid-sentence in a comment or perhaps writing another message on the social network, it can become very easy to get distracted. Whereas going offline on Facebook Chat once required one click of the mouse, the current way to block all incoming instant messages is a little more difficult.

Access the Facebook Chat Settings

Next, users must access the Facebook Chat settings to turn off the feature, thus blocking all incoming instant messages to your account.

Follow these steps to access your settings panel and go offline on Facebook Chat:

  1. Locate the cogwheel icon on your buddy list.
  2. Click the icon to open the drop-down menu, as illustrated above.
  3. Un-check Available to Chat from the menu.

Upon un-checking this option, your buddy list will minimize within the window and you will appear as offline to friends and family on your Facebook account. This will prevent any additional IMs from being delivered to you using Chat.

With Facebook Chat in offline mode, you will not be able to see who else is online without re-activating the feature.

How to Enable Facebook Chat

When you wish to receive IMs again, clicking the buddy list tab (which will appear minimized as "Offline") will allow you to appear as online to your contacts and able to receive messages.

Blocking Facebook Private Messages in Your Inbox

You should be aware these settings will not, however, inhibit a user from sending you notes in your Facebook Messages inbox.

To block who can send you private messages to your inbox, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the arrow icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Click the arrow icon.
  3. Select Privacy Settings.
  4. Locate the How You Connect entry and click the Edit Settings link.
  5. Find the Who Can Send You Messages? entry and click the drop-down menu.
  6. Select from Everyone, Friends of Friends or Friends.
  7. Click the blue Done button to continue.

Create a Facebook Chat Block List

How to Block on Facebook Chat

You may wish to leave Facebook Chat enabled but would like to block only certain contacts from sending you instant messages. This can be accomplished by creating a block list for individual Facebook Chat users you wish to avoid.

To create this list, first visit the profile of a contact you wish to block and follow these steps:

  1. Locate and click on the Friends menu, as illustrated above.
  2. Scroll down and click + New List at the bottom.
  3. Enter the name of your new block list.
  4. Select the block list title and ensure it is checked.

You do not have to un-check any additional friends lists this contact may be a member of, so long as the block list is checked.

Locate the Facebook profiles of each individual person you wish to block, select the Friends menu and select the block list. Continue to perform this action until you have added as many people as you wish to block.

This action will allow you to appear as offline and unable to see or receive instant messages from those whose name was added to your block list(s). You will be able to continue sending IMs to all those listed on your buddy list.

Under this option, you should create a list and add each individual from their profile, as illustrated in Step 3 of this tutorial.
