The iPad's home screen displays icons for navigating the device's many applications and settings quickly. Among these apps is Safari, Apple's web browser, which is included with all its operating systems. It enjoys a long history of cutting-edge features, continuous updates, security protections, and ongoing enhancements.

The version that comes bundled with iOS (Apple's mobile operating system) is tailored to the touch-centered mobile device experience. It's loaded with features that make it a convenient, easy-to-use surfing tool. One especially useful feature is the ability to put shortcuts to your favorite web pages right on your iPad's Home screen. It's an easy, must-learn trick that'll save you lots of time and frustration.

The information in this article applies to iPads running iOS 7 through iOS 12, with one exception; the Share button is located at the bottom of the screen instead of the top in some versions.

How to Add a Home Screen Icon for a Web Page

Making a Home screen icon for a web page that you visit frequently saves time. Here's how to do it.

  1. Tap the Safari icon, typically located on your iPad Home screen, to open the main browser window.

  2. Go to the web page that you want to add as a Home screen icon. Tap on the Share button at the top of the browser window. It's represented by a square with an up arrow.

  3. In the Sharing screen that appears, scroll across and tap Add to Home Screen.

  4. In the Add to Home interface that opens, edit the name of the shortcut icon you are creating if needed. This step is optional, but a short name is best. It represents the title that displays on the Home screen under the icon. Once you are done, tap Add.

  5. Your iPad's Home screen now contains a new icon mapped to your chosen web page. If you have multiple home screens, it may appear on any one of them that isn't filled.

The web page shortcut icon can be moved around and to additional Home screens just like any other icon. When you no longer need it, delete it in the same way that you delete apps from the iPad.
