How Big Is the iPad? How Much Does It Weigh?

iPads Get Lighter with Each Generation

The entire iPad family: Pro, Air and Mini.

 Apple, Inc.

The iPad has enjoyed several form factors since its introduction. While the iPad has grown considerably in power, it has not grown in size. In 2018, the 9.7-inch iPad is thinner and weighs less than the original iPad despite being 10 times more powerful. The iPad mini is even smaller and matches the features of its bigger brother. The iPad Pro is considerably larger than its siblings, but it weighs about the same as the original iPad.

iPad mini 4

The iPad mini 4 has a 7.9-inch screen measured diagonally. It is 8 inches high, 5.3 inches wide and 0.24 inches thick. The iPad mini weighs 0.66 pounds, with the 4G version weighing in at a barely noticeable 0.01 of a pound heavier.

9.7-inch iPad Pro

Apple introduced its iPad Pro line with the 12.9-inch Pro debuting in November 2015. The following March, Apple announced the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. This iPad cost $100 more than an iPad Air 2 when it debuted and contains a processor as powerful as the one found in the larger iPad Pro. It is the same basic size and weight as the iPad Air 2.

12.9-inch iPad Pro

With a 12.9-inch screen, the iPad Pro is the biggest iPad. It is 12 inches high, 8.7 inches wide and just 0.27 inches thick. This makes it slightly thicker than the iPad mini, but only measuring the device shows the difference. The iPad Pro weighs 1.57 pounds, with the 4G version bringing this up to 1.594 pounds.

iPad Air 2

The iPad Air 2 is a 9.7-inch iPad, which is the same screen size as the original. It is 9.4 inches high, 6.67 inches wide and the same 0.24 inches thick as the iPad mini. The iPad Air 2 weighs 0.963 pounds, with the 4G version bringing that up to 0.979 of a pound. The iPad Air 2 was discontinued by Apple in March 2017, but there are still plenty of them around.

Original iPad

A good way to appreciate how far the iPad has come is to take a look at the original 9.7-inch iPad. The first-generation iPad is 9.56 inches high, 7.47 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick. That makes it twice as thick as the iPad Air 2. It weighed 1.5 pounds for the Wi-Fi version and 1.6 pounds for the 3G version, which is about the same as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
