Windows Live Hotmail knows more colors than black and green, and it has not true command line either. That does not mean, of course, that it would not listen to keyboard commands—and react to them swiftly.

Use Windows Live Hotmail Keyboard Shortcuts

To make sure Windows Live Hotmail keyboard shortcuts are enabled:

  • Select Options | More options in Windows Live Hotmail.
  • Follow the Keyboard shortcuts link under Customizing Hotmail.
  • Make sure Hotmail and Outlook Web Access (OWA) is selected under Select which mode you'd like to use:.
    • You can pick a different set of keyboard shortcuts, of course, which correspond to the respective services (Gmail or Yahoo! Mail, for instance) instead of the keys and combinations listed below.

To operate Windows Live Hotmail fast, employ the following keyboard shortcuts:

In the Message List

  • Ctrl-N: Start composing a new message
  • S followed by
    • A: Check all messages
    • N: Uncheck all messages
  • F followed by
    • I: Go to the Inbox folder
    • D: Go to the Drafts folder
    • S: Go to the Sent folder
  • /: Focus the Search your e-mail field

With Messages Checked

  • Del: Delete checked mail
  • Ctrl-Shift-J: Mark checked mail as spam
  • Ctrl-U: Mark checked mail as unread
  • Ctrl-Q: Mark checked mail as read
  • Ctrl-Shift-V: Open the Move to menu
  • Ctrl-Shift-P: Print checked mail (continuously)
  • Ctrl-Shift-O: Open a single checked message

With a Message Open in the Preview Pane or its Own

  • Del: Delete the message
  • Ctrl-R: Reply to the message sender
  • Ctrl-Shift-R: Reply to the message sender and all recipients (except yourself)
  • Ctrl-Shift-F: Forward the message
  • Ctrl-Shift-V: Open the Move to menu
  • Esc: Close the message
  • Ctrl-Shift-J: Mark the message as spam
  • Ctrl-U: Mark the message as unread
  • Ctrl-Q: Mark the message as read
  • Ctrl-.: Go to the next message
  • Ctrl-,: Go to the previous message

While Composing a Message

  • Ctrl-Enter: Send the message
  • Ctrl-S: Save the message as a draft to the Drafts folder
  • F7: Check the spelling

Yahoo! Mail or Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows Live Hotmail

As an alternative to Windows Live Hotmail's own shortcuts, you can also enable the keyboard shortcuts you know from Yahoo! Mail or Gmail.
