How to Highlight Text in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

Sure, making text bold or changing its color is great. It is also not really like using a highlighter to mark the important points.

While Windows Mail's formatting toolbar does not allow you to change the background to imitate a marker pen, its source editing does. Tweaking the HTML code to highlight text is easier than it might sound, and it works in Outlook Express just as well.

Highlight Text as with a Marker Pen in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

To highlight text by changing the background color as with a marker pen in Windows Mail or Outlook Express:

  • Make sure your message uses rich text formatting.
  • Type the text you want to highlight.
  • Go to the Source tab.
  • Place the insertion mark right before the characters you want to highlight.
  • Type '<span style="background-color:yellow;">' (not including the outer single quotation marks).
  • Place the insertion mark right after the characters you want to highlight.
  • Type '</span>' (excluding the outer single quotation marks again).
  • Go to the Edit tab and continue your message.

Of course, you can replace "yellow" with any other color keyword or code.
