One of the great things about the Harman Kardon HKTS 20 system is that is actually comes with all the connection cables to set it up. Harman Kardon has supplied more than enough cable length for any practical speaker setup.

Starting at the top of this photo are two 10-meter (32.8 ft)speaker cables. These are used to connect the left and right rear surround satellite speakers to your home theater receiver.

Moving down both the left and right side of the photo, below each of the rear satellite speaker cables are the 5-meter (16.4 ft) speaker cables. These cables are for the front left and right satellite speakers.

In the center of the photo (between the front left and right speaker cables) is a short 4-meter speaker cable. This is for the center channel speaker.

Finally at the bottom of the photo is combination Subwoofer cable that includes connections for both the audio portion of the subwoofer signal, and a 12 volt-trigger signal. Connecting the 12 volt trigger part of the cable is optional, as you must also have a home theater receiver with a 12 volt trigger function in order for this cable to work.

In addition to the speakers and connection cables, Harman Kardon has also included everything you need to mount your speakers on the wall, if desired.

Along the top of the photo are the four wall mounting brackets for the satellite speakers. Those brackets, once mounted, swivel, to further aid in direct the sound of the satellite speakers.

In the center of the photo is, appropriately, the wall mount provided for the center channel speaker. This is a flat mount as there is no need for the center channel speaker to swivel, although it would have been nice to make it so that the center channel speaker could be tilted up or down.

Finally, along the bottom of the photo are the four stop plates that fasten onto the bottom of the speakers and keep them firmly attached to the swivel wall mounts. As you can see, a bag of screws is provided.

Harman Kardon HKTS 20 Speaker System - Subwoofer - Controls and Connections

Here is a close-up look at the adjustment controls and connections for the Powered Subwoofer.

The controls are as follows:

Subwoofer Level: This is also commonly referred as Volume or Gain. This is used to set the volume of the subwoofer in relation to the other speakers.

Bass Boost: This setting boost the output of the extreme low frequencies (+3 db at 60 Hz) in relation to the other bass frequencies.

Phase Switch: This control matches the in/out subwoofer driver motion to the satellite speakers. This control has two positions Normal (0) or Reverse (180 degrees).

Power On Mode: If set to ON, the subwoofer is always on, regardless if a signal is passing through. On the other hand, if the Power On Mode is set to Auto, the subwoofer will only activate when it detects an incoming low frequency signal.

External Trigger Input: This allows an additional connection between a home theater receiver and the subwoofer via a 12 Volt Trigger. This allows the subwoofer to be activated by a direct signal pulse from a 12 Volt Trigger-equipped home theater receiver. The Trigger will function only when the Power On Mode is set to Auto. The alternative is useful because the subwoofer may activate faster using the 12 Volt Trigger method than just merely set to Auto On without using the 12 Volt Trigger.

In addition to the Subwoofer controls are the the Input connections, which include an LFE line level RCA input, 1 set line level/RCA phono jacks (red, white).

If your home theater receiver has a dedicated subwoofer output and built-in crossover settings, it is best to connect the subwoofer line output from a home theater receiver to the LFE line input (purple) of the HKTS20 subwoofer.

If your home theater receiver does not have a dedicated subwoofer output, another option is to connect to the subwoofer using the L/R stereo (red/white) RCA audio input connections.

Final Take

The HKTS 20 is a great example of well-styled compact system that does not dominate room decor. The Harman Kardon HKTS 20 can function well as a modest home theater speaker system for the budget and/or space conscious, a great second system for the bedroom or home office, or a practical system for a conference room in a either a business or educational-type setting.

The Harman Kardon HKTS 20 is worth a look and a listen.
