Ways to Hack Wi-Fi With Android Devices

Android phones and tablets are popular tools for hacking due to the open nature of the Android platform. Hackers employ a variety of strategies to target Wi-Fi networks using Android devices.

Hacking Wi-Fi Network Keys and Passcodes

One common Android hack involves discovering the WPA or other private wireless security keys in use on a local Wi-Fi network. When successful, hackers can use these discovered keys to gain access to an otherwise protected network.

For example, an app called Reaver can be run on Android to discover the security keys on some Wi-Fi networks with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) enabled. Reaver works by guessing the 8-digit WPS pin, a process that can take many hours.

Due to the potential liability risks of hacking software being utilized for illegal activities, Reaver is not available in the Google Play Store. You must sideload the app to use it on your Android device.

Hacking Passwords and Sessions Across Wi-Fi

Android hackers can also discover the passwords of devices connected to a Wi-Fi network using various apps. So-called password recovery apps can be especially useful when a network administrator has forgotten the password to their broadband router.

Other Android apps are designed to analyze local Wi-Fi network traffic and discover the data needed to impersonate another user on various websites. For example, DroidSheep is a general-purpose session hijacking tool for Android. FaceNiff is targeted at Facebook and other social networks.

How to Hack Wi-Fi Networks Without Rooting

You must first root your Android device before you can use most hacking tools; however, there are a few hacking apps available on Google Play that don't require rooting.

Wi-Fi WPS WPA Tester is one such tool. It can test dozens of default WPS passwords on a network in seconds. Consequently, it will only be successful if the network uses a default password.

Once you download and install the app, open it to see a list of all Wi-Fi networks with WPS enabled. To start hacking:

  1. Tap the network you wish to hack.

    The color of the lock under the network name indicates how vulnerable it is. Green means less secure while orange and red means more secure.

  2. Scroll down on the next screen and tap Connect Automatic with try all Pins.

  3. Wait as the app tries to connect with the network. Once finished, you'll either be connected, or you'll receive an error message.

Most publicly available Android Wi-Fi hacking apps are fake programs that do not perform any hacking functions but are instead designed to help people fool their friends and family. These apps should be clearly marked in stores as prank software.
