What We Don't Like

  • Slow barcode scanner

Grocery IQ (Free) is a full-featured grocery app that covers all the bases. It is easy to use and a great alternative to shopping apps that cost money. That’s why it tops our list of the best iPhone grocery list apps

Grocery IQ's Easy Keyword Search

Grocery IQ includes pretty much all the features one would want in a grocery list app. When you first launch the app, you’ll see a brief help guide that provides basic instructions. The interface is very easy to figure out -- just tap the + sign in the top right-hand corner to begin adding items to your shopping list. There are a few ways you can do this, including searching by keyword, manually entering a barcode number, or scanning the barcode.

Searching by keyword is super easy and is how I created most of my shopping lists. Grocery IQ has a huge database (items number in the millions, according to the app description), and I was able to find everything I searched for, including some pretty obscure brand names.

Slow Barcode Scanner

The barcode scanner isn't the best. It takes quite a while to complete the scan, and trying to hold your iPhone still for that length of time is no fun. Searching by keyword is much faster.

Items on the shopping list are automatically grouped into sections to make for easier shopping. For example, items like cereal and maple syrup would be grouped under the breakfast aisle, etc. The item detail page includes a large amount of information -- you can specify quantity or price, add a note, or select which type of store it comes from (the ability to create different lists by type of store is incredibly helpful!). Each item has a large checkbox next to it so you can mark items as you shop.

You can edit your grocery list online at, which makes the process of creating your list much faster and easier. The Grocery IQ app also includes a coupon section, but you have to print or email the coupons from the app. It would be nice if the coupons had a barcode that could be scanned directly in the grocery store.

The Bottom Line on Grocery IQ

Grocery IQ is an excellent shopping app that is simple and easy to use. The app has a huge database of items, and it takes no time at all to add items to your grocery list. The ability to create lists for different stores and group items by aisle is also handy. The barcode scanner is a little slow, so the app may be better for those who prefer to use the keyword search function. Overall rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Grocery IQ is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It requires iPhone OS 3.1 or later.
