When it comes to personal audio, the word "portable" can mean something different to everyone. Speakers are readily available in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from anything as large as luggage down to the bitty kinds that can fit in palms. Because sacrifices have to be made as hardware shrinks, most are content to settle on a portable speaker that is, well, portable. If it is small enough to conveniently carry in one hand and/or be stuffed in a bag or backpack, yet large enough to sound fantastic as it plays, the chances are pretty good that music will tag along wherever you go.

The market for mid-sized speakers is fairly saturated. But those interested in a portable speaker different from most – one that's a little more muscular and extreme – the latest from Grace Digital's EcoXGear brand is ready to rock some socks off. The EcoXGear EcoBoulder is a massive, Bluetooth wireless boombox that shares an uncanny resemblance to a piece of rolling carry-on luggage.

Measuring 20 in high by 15 in wide by 12 in deep (50 cm x 38 x 30 cm) and weighing 27 lb (12.2 kg), the EcoXGear design team thankfully had the foresight to integrate a telescoping handle and oversized outdoor wheels into the EcoBoulder. At nine pounds lighter, the Braven BRV-XXL speaker can be a bit much to lug around across distances. And that's even with using its accompanying shoulder strap! So the EcoBoulder's rolling wheels are practical for sure.

Despite its colossal size, the EcoXGear EcoBoulder is still considered portable, thanks to the built-in battery that is supposed to be able to play up to 10 hours of max-volume music (or 100 hours of standby time). Dialing the decibels back a bit may just allow the EcoBoulder to last from sunrise to well past sunset. Either way, this is the kind of speaker that can command a party inside or out. The EcoXGear EcoBoulder is designed to deliver up to 100 W of power to its 8-inch full-range driver, 8-inch woofer, and 3-inch tweeter. One can expect some respectable projection.

Why the EcoXGear EcoBoulder Bluetooth Wireless Speaker Might Be for You

Now, if your festive events tend to be on the tame side, the EcoXGear EcoBoulder might seem like more speaker than would be necessary. But anyone who has spent enough time outside knows that nature can be brutal and totally unforgiving when it comes to tech and electronics. And the EcoBoulder boasts some pretty fantastic features which take all that into consideration.

A lot of portable speakers are water-resistant, but the EcoXGear EcoBoulder goes full-on dust- and waterproof with an IP67 certification and UV-resistant exterior. Not only is the EcoBoulder good to shrug off the wayward wave or tailgate tallboy, but it's completely submersible and it floats. Gadgets taking a dive into lakes or oceans isn't something that only happens on YouTube. And trying to fish almost 30 lbs worth of gear from the deep end of a pool is not fun, so the EcoBoulder certainly has its bases covered.

The EcoXGear EcoBoulder packs a waterproof dry storage compartment that is roomy enough to fit a large smartphone and/or small tablet with space to spare for cables. Again, outdoor accidents can happen, and there's little reason why a perfectly good mobile device would need to take a dunk. So thumbs up to this speaker for harboring something similar to a built-in Pelican case for convenient protection.

Users can plug USB devices into either of the two output ports (one of which is located in the storage compartment) for charging. The EcoXGear EcoBoulder also offers an external microphone jack (ideal for karaoke or a PA system) and a pair of 3.5 mm auxiliary inputs to play music from any wired source. In addition to the Bluetooth 4.1 wireless connectivity, this speaker has a built-in digital AM/FM radio with six presets accessible from the back-lit buttons and LED display.

Best of all, if one EcoBoulder isn't enough, users can opt to pair two to stream wirelessly together. The EcoXGear EcoBoulder Bluetooth speaker is available to order now for US$250.
