Google Web Sites is Google's way of letting you create your own personal Google Website. Although not quite as easy to use as Google Page Creator was, it's a very good online website builder. Google Web Sites offers some tools that Google Page Creator didn't. Once you get used to using Google Web Sites, you're going to like building your website with it.

Introduction to Google Sites

Google sites landing page

One of the great features that Google Web Sites offer is the ability to organize your website's Web pages into categories. For instance, if you have a bunch of pages about all your favorite baseball players, you can put them all into one category. This makes it easier to find them later when you want to edit them.

You'll also be able to control who can see and who can edit your Google Web Sites website. If you're creating a website for your group or family, you may not want to be the only one who can edit the website. Give permission to other people too. Maybe you can update the calendar and someone else can update the current events.

Also, make it so only members of your website can see your site. If you want to create a private website where only certain people can see it and participate in it, you can do this with Google Sites. Give permission to only the people you want to be able to view your website.

If you like all that Google has to offer, then you're going to love the way Google Web Sites lets you embed all their Google tools into your website. Connect your Google calendar and your Google Docs to your Web pages. You can even add things like videos to any of your Google Web Sites Web pages.

Begin building your Google Sites website by first going to the Google Sites homepage. Then click on the blue button that says "Create Site."

On the next page, you will need to fill in a few things.

  1. What do you want your website to be called? Don't just call it Joe's Website, give it a unique name that will make people want to read it.
  2. URL Address – Make your website's address easy to remember so your friends can find it easily, even if they lost the bookmark.
  3. Site Description – Tell a little about you and your website. Describe to the people coming to your website what they'll find as they browse around and read it.
  4. Mature Content? – If your website contains adult-only material, then you need to click on this option.
  5. Who To Share With – Make your site public to the whole world, or only make it viewable to the people you choose. It's up to you how you want to run your Google Sites website.

Choose a Theme for Your Google Sites Website

Google site design options

Google Sites offers several themes that you can use to personalize your website. A theme adds color and personality to your website. A theme can make or break your website so think about what your website's about and choose carefully. Hopefully, Google will add some more themes later for better user experience.

Some of the themes offered by Google sites are plain, just colors. These are good if you want more of a professional-looking theme for your website.

There are also other themes that work a little better for a personal website. There's one that looks like it would be great for a kid's website, complete with clouds and grass. There's another one that is just sparkles. Look through these Google Sites themes and choose which one you think best represents your website.
