We've already covered the best paid iPhone ringtone apps, but what if you don't want to spend any money to get your tones? With these free apps, you can create ringtones from your existing iTunes music library and choose from pre-made tones, sounds effects, and more.

The biggest downside? Most of these apps contain ads and some of them have difficult-to-use interfaces. Keep in mind that while these apps are free, you'll still need to pay to download songs from iTunes or rip them from CDs in order to use them to create ringtones.

If you would rather buy ringtones for your iPhone, you can certainly do that, too.

Ringtones 500000+

Ringtones 500000+ offers two distinct approaches to custom ringtones: it both lets you create your own and download pre-made tones. As the name suggests, you can expect to find over 500,000 ring and alert tones, in categories like Comedy, Hip Hop, Pets & Animal, and more.

On the other hand, the custom ringtone editor lets you create tones from music on your phone, from recordings, and apply voice morphing effects. A $0.99 in-app purchase removes ads from the app.

Ringtone Converter is a great choice for creating unlimited free tones from your existing music library. The interface isn't as sleek as some of its competitors, but Ringtone Converter is still a solid choice.

Ringtone DJ

Ringtone DJ gives you a DJ mixing board as your main interface for creating ringtones. Move a selection window around a song's waveform to select a snippet and then preview it. Once you've got your clip, though, in-app purchases allow you to add effects like record scratches, voice recordings, pitch changes, and more. (You can remove in-app purchase capabilities, by the way.) The ability to add effects is pretty neat although the interface can be a little tricky to navigate.

While a lot of ringtone apps offer similar features, this one doesn't have something many of them do: in-app purchases. Don't expect to be hounded to spend extra money here. The ringtones truly are free.

Ringtones Free takes many features that are common to other apps on this list – pre-loaded ringtones that you can use, an editor to make your own custom ringtones from your music, a recorder to capture sounds to use for tones – and adds some neat twists. For instance, you can share the ringtones you create on social media like Facebook and Twitter, but also within the app and allow other users to rate your work. Make your ringtones, even more, custom using the app's effects, which include fades, pitch adjustments, and the ability to reverse sound clips.

Like a number of apps on this list, Ringtones for iPhone provides three ways to add new ringtones to your iPhone. First, you can use songs from your iPhone's music library and clip them into ringtones using the apps' built-in editor.

If you prefer non-musical sounds like people's voices or nature, use the app's recording tool to create a ringtone. Lastly, if you just want something quick, a number of pre-made ringtones come with the app that is also available for download.
