How to Forward an Email Message in

Trying to send an email you've received to someone else? Here's how.

If you got an interesting or funny (or interesting and funny—or interestingly funny) message, you may want to share it with your (interesting and funny) friends. If you're using Microsoft's, a free web-based email app, this is easy.

Instructions in this article apply to Outlook Online.

Forward an Email with

To share an email by forwarding it to others in, follow these steps:

  1. In your inbox, select the email you want to forward.

  2. Select the More actions (denoted by 3 dots ...) located in the top right corner of the email. This will open choices for directing your email, including Reply All and Forward.

  3. Select Forward from the menu. This creates a new email you can send to your recipients that includes the forwarded email content. A horizontal line will appear in the new message; below this line will appear content that was part of the forwarded email.

  4. In the To field, enter the emails of the recipients to whom you want the email forwarded. When a complete email address is entered, select the option that appears labeled Use this address followed by the email address you just entered (alternately, you can press Enter to accept the email address you've typed in). If your intended recipients are in your contacts, you can start typing their names and select the contact as it appears in the search choices.

  5. Add your own message to give the forwarded email some context by typing in the space above the horizontal line that separates the old email content. Including a message in a forwarded email is always good etiquette as it saves recipients from the labor of having to figure out why you sent them the forwarded email.

  6. When you are finished entering all of the recipients of the forwarded email, you can send by selecting Send in the menu at the top of the email.

Forwarding Emails That Have Attachments

If the email you are forwarding also has an attached file, this will automatically be attached to the new forwarded email message. These attachments will appear at the top of the new email and display the file's name and its type (e.g., PDF, DOCX, JPG, etc.).

If you do not want to forward attachments with the email, you can remove them by selecting the X in the upper right of the attachment box. This deletes the file attachment from the message, but the forwarded message text remains in the body of the email itself.

Cleaning Up Forwarded Emails

There may be content in a forwarded email that you do not want to include, such as email addresses of past recipients. You can clean up your forwarded email simply by deleting any unwanted content. 

For example, if you don't want the email addresses of those in the previous email message, look for the header section of the past message where these details will be listed. This header information will include: 

  • From - who sent the previous email originally
  • Sent - the date and time the previous email was sent
  • To - the original direct recipients of the previous email
  • Cc - people who were copied on the previous message
  • Subject - the subject of the previous email
