When a picture in your PowerPoint presentation has the wrong focus or is oriented in the wrong direction, flip the picture. When you flip a picture, you'll either have a mirror image of the picture or an upside down picture.

Instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010; PowerPoint for Office 365, and PowerPoint Online.

Flip a Picture Horizontally on a PowerPoint Slide

Flip a picture horizontally on a slide when the focus of the picture is facing the wrong way for your purpose. You may have a picture that would be perfect if it was just facing in the opposite direction.

Ideally, the subject of interest is leading into the slide, if the topic needs more information. If the focus is somewhat of an exit, face the photo in a direction that shows it leaving the slide.

In the sample slide below, the picture is duplicated and then flipped horizontally to demonstrate a tennis move for either right-handed or left-handed players.

Steps to flip a picture horizontally:

  1. Select the picture you want to flip.

Flip Picture Vertically on a PowerPoint Slide

Flip a picture vertically on a slide and turn the picture upside down. Perhaps you have a chart of your company sales but it is shown from lowest to highest. You might want to flip it to focus on the highest sales that year.

On the sample slide shown below, the picture of a prop plane is flipped vertically to show how it might appear at times during an air show.

Steps to flip a picture vertically:

  1. Select the picture you want to flip upside-down.
