How to Fix It When the Snapchat Camera Isn't Working

What to do when you get a black screen, and more

When you open the Snapchat camera, you may experience a variety of issues, including:

  • A black screen.
  • The camera appears to be zoomed in.
  • Snaps have poor image/video quality.
  • Video snaps don't include any sound.
  • The Long Snap feature doesn't work.
  • You can't access a new Snapchat feature.

Here's why these issues occur and what you can do to fix them.

Causes of the Snapchat Camera Not Working

A variety of problems can cause Snapchat camera issues. These include:

  • Technical issues or downtime on Snapchat's side.
  • Too many apps are open for too long (slow app or device performance).
  • You have an outdated version of the Snapchat app.
  • An outdated mobile operating system.
  • There's a slow or spotty internet connection.
  • Settings related to your device's camera, microphone, or sound are wonky.
  • Older devices.

How to Fix It When the Snapchat Camera Isn't Working

Follow these instructions in the order they appear until you resolve your Snapchat camera issues. You can follow these steps whether you're using Snapchat on an iOS device or an Android.

  1. Restart Snapchat on the iOS app or restart Snapchat on Android. Closing and reopening the Snapchat app can often be enough to restore performance.

  2. Restart your iPhone or restart your Android device. If restarting Snapchat doesn't work, you may need to restart your entire device to close all open apps and clear out the RAM.

  3. Check to see if Snapchat is experiencing widespread issues. Sometimes the problem is on Snapchat's end, affecting many users all at once. You can confirm this by checking to see if it's trending on social media or checking for updates on Snapchat's social accounts like Twitter or Facebook.

  4. Update your Snapchat iOS app or Android app. Snapchat continually updates its iOS and Android apps with optimizations, bug fixes, and new features. If your Snapchat app version is outdated, you're more likely to experience performance issues.

  5. Check your internet connection. Try testing your connection by switching between Wi-Fi and your mobile data and seeing if your Snapchat camera issue resolves itself when you make the switch. If you find that Snapchat works fine on one but not the other, contact your mobile service provider and/or your internet service provider for support.

  6. Check your device settings. Make sure that Snapchat has permission to access your camera and microphone. If the sound is the main issue, make sure to check that your volume isn't low or muted or that your device isn't on silent mode.

  7. Update your mobile operating system. If you can't update your Snapchat app or you're still experiencing issues, you may need to update iOS if you have an iPhone or update Android if you have an Android device. Once updated, you can go back to step four and try updating the app if you could not do so before.

  8. Contact Apple or your Android device manufacturer. If none of the above troubleshooting suggestions work, the issue may be something with your device. You may be able to confirm this by signing into your Snapchat account on another device (like a friend's) and discovering that it works just fine. A technician may be able to determine the problem with your device.

  9. Upgrade your device. Smartphones and tablets go obsolete faster than you think. If you've had yours for many years or have a device that doesn't support the latest iOS or Android OS version, you may need to upgrade your device to resolve any Snapchat issues you may still be experiencing.
