My iPad Screen is a Fuzzy Green, Red or Blue

A not-so-common problem with the iPad is the screen becoming obscured or 'fuzzy', often filled predominantly with a single color, usually green, red or blue. This "green screen" problem can be caused by a simple software glitch, at which point the solution is easy, or a hardware issue, which can be a little more difficult to fix.

First: Reboot Your iPad

The first step in troubleshooting most problems is to simply reboot the device. When you suspend the iPad by clicking the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the device or by closing the Smart Cover, you aren't actually turning the iPad off. In order to power down, you should hold the Sleep/Wake button down for several seconds, releasing it only when the iPad prompts you to slide a button to power down. When you see this prompt, slide the button using your finger and the iPad will shut down.

Once the screen has gone completely dark, hold the Sleep/Wake button down until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. At this point, you can release the button. It will take the iPad a few more seconds to fully boot up.

Next: Reset to Factory Default

If a simple reboot doesn't work, the best thing to do is to reset the iPad to the state it was in when you first purchased it. This entails wiping all of the settings and data from the iPad, so it is very important to first back the iPad up, preferably using iCloud. If you have an iCloud backup, you can restore from that backup during the initiation processes.

You can reset the iPad by going to Settings, choosing General Settings and scrolling to the bottom until you see the Reset option. In order to reset to factory default, you will need to choose "Erase All Content and Settings". The iPad will prompt you to confirm your choice before proceeding, and the entire process may take a few minutes.

After the iPad is reset, it will take you through the steps to set up the iPad for use. One of these steps includes signing into your iCloud account and restoring it from backup. After this is completed, the iPad should be mostly how you had it before you started the process.

If Resetting the iPad Doesn't Work...

If you are still having issues even after restoring the iPad to Factory Default, you may have a hardware issue. The best way to solve this is to go to an Apple Store or call Apple Support at 1-800-676-2775. However, if your iPad is not under warranty, this can be an expensive issue to fix. In fact, you might end up better off simply buying a new iPad.

But if you aren't under warranty, there is one thing you can try. We caution that this is a 'last resort' and should only be used if your only other option is to trash the iPad and buy a new one.

The issue with the colors is most likely due to something coming loose ​in the iPad. Many people have been able to fix this issue by giving the back of the iPad a few hard slaps. Of course, any time you physically hit a device like an iPad, you are risking some damage, which is why this is more of a last resort. If you are still under warranty, you may want to play it safe by simply getting the iPad fixed.

Before you try this, make sure the iPad is suspended. You don't want the screen turned on while trying to fix it.

The recommended advice is to hit the iPad on the back with three hard slaps. You should not hit it hard enough to break anything, but with enough force to fix the issue. If this doesn't work, you can try hitting the iPad on the back in the upper-right corner. This is where the issue most likely resides. Some users sit down and slap the iPad against their knee to accomplish this.

Again, you should not use enough force to physically damage the iPad, so don't put all of your muscle into it. You should also only use this advice as a last resort.

My iPad Still Doesn't Work...

If all else fails, you will be left with replacing the iPad. There are plenty of ways to get a good deal on an iPad, including buying a refurbished unit. Another way to help pay for the iPad is to put your existing one up for sale on eBay or Craigslist "for parts". Believe it or not, broken electronics can sell. Even an iPad with a cracked screen can go for $20-$50.
