How to Fix GeForce Experience Error Code 0x0001

If you use an NVIDIA graphics card, you're likely familiar with the GeForce Experience. This companion app keeps drivers up to date, optimizes games to play and look the best, and makes it a simple process to save your best gameplay clips to share. If you have an NVIDIA account, you can log in to GeForce Experience to enter giveaways and potentially win prizes. If you experience the GeForce Experience error code 0x0001, here's how to fix it so you can get back to your games.

Causes of GeForce Experience Error Code 0x0001

The problems arise when you see the GeForce Experience error code 0x0001. This error occurs most often when launching the companion application, and it can be hard to figure out exactly why. That's because it's a catch-all error code and can be raised for many reasons. The best you can do is walk through each, one-by-one.

How to Fix GeForce Experience Error Code 0x0001

If you see error code 0x0001, follow these troubleshooting steps to track down exactly what causes it.

  1. Configure NVIDIA Driver Services correctly. NVIDIA launches multiple processes within the Windows Services Manager. To view the Windows Services Manager, go to Run, enter services.msc, then press the Enter key on the keyboard. The Services window opens and shows all currently running services. Make sure you can see the following services, and if so, make sure the Startup types match what is described below:

    • NVIDIA Display Container LS: Automatic
    • NVIDIA NetworkService Container: Manual
    • NVIDIA LocalSystem Container: Automatic
    • NVIDIA GeForce Experience Service: Automatic (Delayed Start)
    • NVIDIA GeForce Experience BackEnd Service: Automatic (Delayed Start)
    • NVIDIA Telemetry Container Service: Automatic

    To check the Startup type, double-click the process to open a Services window. Once you have completed this, close all windows and restart the PC.

    You might not see all of these services running when you open the Windows Services Manager.

  2. Make sure NVIDIA services can interact with the local system account. The NVIDIA driver services listed above must have access to the local system account to operate properly. Denial of this access can result in error code 0x0001. To make sure each service can work as it's supposed to, open the Windows Services Manager, and locate each relevant NVIDIA service. 

    1. Double-click the first NVIDIA service, then select Properties.
    2. Select Log On.
    3. A circle that says Local System Account displays. Make sure it's activated, and select the Allow service to interact with desktop check box.
    4. Repeat this process with all NVIDIA services.
    5. Restart the machine and launch the GeForce Experience application again. 
  3. Make sure the files are owned by SYSTEM. A PC relies on a complex series of permissions to perform tasks within the operating system. If the NVIDIA files are not owned by the correct entity within the OS, it can cause error code 0x0001. It's not difficult to change ownership of files. The first thing to do is open File Explorer and navigate to Program Files (x86).

    This first section only applies to 64-bit architecture systems. On a 32-bit system, skip to the bottom of this step.

    1. Open the Program Files (x86) folder, then right-click the NVIDIA Corporation folder. Select Properties > Security > Advanced.
    2. Look for Advanced Security Settings and ensure that Owner is set to System.
    3. From the File Explorer, go to Local Disk (C:) > Program Files, then right-click the NVIDIA Corporation folder.
    4. Select Properties > Security > Advanced. The Advanced Security Settings for NVIDIA Corporation window appears.
    5. Look for the area that says Owner and make sure it is set to System. If it isn't, select the blue Change button.
    6. When the next window appears, enter System, and select Okay.
    7. Select Apply at the bottom of the window to save the changes.
  4. Update the NVIDIA drivers. One of the most common causes of errors is an out of date driver. Even when drivers are set to update automatically, problems can still arise.

    1. To update the driver, go to the NVIDIA Driver page.
    2. Manually select the operating system and GPU type to find the driver you need, or use the NVIDIA automatic deletion tool to streamline the process.
    3. After you download and install the driver, restart the PC, and open GeForce Experience again.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall drivers. Updating drivers is important, but sometimes glitches pop up that can't be explained or solved in any reasonable way. When this happens, the best solution is to uninstall the driver completely and do a fresh install. It's the software equivalent of turning it off and back on again.

    However, uninstalling drivers is not straightforward. Use a display driver uninstaller to make sure the drivers and all related files are completely removed. Then, find and download the proper driver from the NVIDIA driver page. Then, restart the PC. After you finish this step, launch the GeForce Experience again.
