Investigate and fix this common error

If you're trying to watch Discovery Plus and keep getting an Error Code 504 message stopping you from streaming content, it can be not very clear why it's happening. To get help troubleshooting error code 504, you need to identify the issue first.

Here's how to get Discovery Plus working again and how to fix Discovery Plus Error Code 504.

What Causes Discovery Plus Error Code 504?

No one issue explains the error message. You may also see the error code: Fallback on Discovery Plus, which looks even more confusing.

Error Code 504 isn't exclusive to Discovery Plus. It indicates a Gateway Timeout Error which means there's a problem with the connection between you and the server—in this case, Discovery Plus. Because of that, there are usually a few different reasons why it shows up. Here's a brief look at the key things that may be occurring:

  • Your internet connection is unstable. If your internet connection is down or unreliable, you may receive this error message to show a problem with the servers.
  • The Discovery Plus servers are down. If the service's servers are down right now, you'll receive this error message to show there's a problem with communication.

Troubleshoot When Discovery Plus Shows Error Code 504

If you can't watch Discovery Plus due to Error Code 504, try these troubleshooting tips to get back up and running.

There are many different ways to watch Discovery Plus, so these tips relate to all of them. If the step doesn't relate to your specific issue, skip it and move onto the next one.

  1. Wait it out. It's a tedious option, but it's worth being patient with Error Code 504 as it's highly likely to fix itself.

  2. Check if Discovery Plus is down for just you or everyone. If it's down for everyone, there's nothing you can do. However, if it's down for just you, you can keep troubleshooting.

  3. Retry the service by refreshing the web browser. This can sometimes fix a temporary Error Code 504 problem.

  4. Clear your browser cache. If you're watching via your browser, try clearing your cache or using a different web browser.

  5. Close the Discovery Plus app completely and reopen it. If you're using the Discovery Plus app, try completely closing the Discovery Plus app and relaunching it. This can help matters. Closing an iPhone app and closing an Android app involve slightly different steps.

  6. Sign out and back into Discovery Plus. Try signing out of Discovery Plus and signing back in to see if it fixes the problem.

  7. Reboot your router. Temporary problems with your modem or router can cause Error Code 504. Restart your devices to confirm this. Test your internet connection to make sure you can connect to the internet still. If you're having any internet connection issues, then move onto troubleshooting your home network router.

  8. Restart your streaming device. If you're using a streaming device, there are different ways to reset them. Here's how to reset a Fire Stick along with how to reset a Roku box and reboot an Apple TV.

  9. Check your proxy server settings. If you have a proxy set up, check that these are correct and accurate. Most users don't have proxy settings, so you can safely skip this step if yours is empty.

  10. Disable your VPN and ad-blocker. Both services can stop Discovery Plus as well as other streaming services from loading properly.

  11. Try a different DNS server. This is an advanced step that's only best if you feel confident to do so, but try using different DNS settings as Error Code 504 may be due to a DNS problem rather than anything to do with your setup or Discovery Plus itself.

  12. Contact customer services. If none of these fixes have worked and you keep getting Error Code 504, contact Discovery Plus customer services. Make sure to provide them with information on what you were trying to watch, the device you're using, and the version of the app you're currently using.
