What Is Fire TV Recast?

Amazon's take on DVRs offers a twist for cord-cutters

The FireTV Recast is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) that connects to an antenna (not cable or satellite) for receiving and recording TV programming.

Fire TV Recast can only record programs received via an antenna. You can't view or record from cable/satellite boxes or streaming apps.

The Fire TV Recast streams any live TV signals it receives and/or recordings it makes through a Fire TV stick/box connected to your TV, or directly to a Fire Edition TV or Echo Show.

Although there are apps that provide live channel streaming, they aren't always free, may require a companion cable subscription, and you typically can't download or record them. The Fire TV Recast eliminates those issues.

  • The Fire TV Recast uses Wi-Fi to send live and recorded programs to compatible devices and TVs. It doesn't physically connect to a TV (there are no AV or HDMI outputs).
  • After purchase, access to all FireTV Recast features is free. This means you don't have to pay for recording or viewing programs.
  • You can schedule recordings up to14 days in advance. You can also schedule the recording of a TV series 14 days before the first episode with subsequent episodes recorded as they become available unless canceled in advance.
  • You can use Alexa with Fire TV Recast via a FireTV Edition TV, stick/box or Echo Show to search for programs, change TV channels, control playback, schedule, cancel, and delete recordings.

What the Fire TV Recast Can't Do

  • Fire TV Recast is not a streaming media player. It doesn't receive, play, or record streaming apps. You need a Fire TV Stick/Box or a Fire TV Edition TV to stream other content (Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, Vudu, etc...).
  • Since there are no physical AV outputs on the FireTV Recast, you can't copy recordings onto VHS or DVD for preservation. Once the hard drive is full, you need to delete recordings to recover space.
  • The Fire TV recast does not work with other branded streaming devices, such as Roku, Apple TV, or Chromecast.

What You Need To Use Fire TV Recast

  • A TV antenna –The number of receivable channels depends on the distance and/or geographical barriers between the TV station transmitter and your location.
  • A Fire Edition TV, Fire TV streaming media player (stick or box) connected to a TV, or Echo Show – These devices must be on the same network and registered to the same Amazon account as Fire TV Recast (one Recast is allowed per account).

Fire TV Recast is compatible with all generations of Fire TV sticks/boxes and Fire TV Edition TVs.

Fire TV Recast Signal Reception Factors

Although the Fire TV Recast receives over-the-air TV broadcast signals for viewing and recording, there are factors that may affect performance:

  • Resolution – TV stations may transmit channels at resolutions varying from 480i to 1080i, which is allowed under current digital TV broadcast guidelines.
  • Antenna location and range – The location and distance of the TV transmitter in relation to your location may require a different indoor or outdoor antenna or placement.
  • Transmitter interference – Other external factors, such as airplane traffic, geographic obstacles, or weather events, may interfere with TV signal(s).

How Much the Fire TV Recast Costs

Amazon's standard price for the 2-tuner/500GB version is $229.99, while the 4-tuner/1 TB version is $279.99.

Amazon's standard pricing doesn't include an antenna, antenna connection cable, Fire TV Stick, box, Fire Edition TV or Echo Show which are also needed to use the Fire TV Recast. Amazon periodically offers promotional or bundle pricing that may include an antenna and/or Fire TV Stick.
