Why Would You Need to Know the MAC Address for Your iPad?

For the average iPad user, there is no reason to be familiar with or memorize your MAC address. It’s not something you’ll need to access regularly if at all. This string of numbers simply identifies your device on your local network. 

For added security, some people may enable MAC address filtering on their wireless router. This allows only devices with specific MAC addresses access to the network. In this case, your network expert may ask you for or to confirm your MAC address to add it to the filter list. This is one situation when knowing where to find that address on your iPad is useful.

Where Can You Find Your iPad's MAC Address?

You may have opened the Settings on your iPad in search of the MAC address only to come up empty-handed. The thing to know is that it’s not labeled as a “MAC” address, but instead a “Wi-Fi” address.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.

  2. Select General.

  3. Choose About.

How to Copy Your iPad MAC Address

If you need to copy the MAC address, long-press the string of numbers and letters in the Wi-Fi Address field and tap Copy. This places that string onto your clipboard so you can paste it wherever you need.

Can You Change the MAC Address on Your iPad?

While a MAC address can possibly be changed or cloned on other types of devices such as computers, you cannot change the MAC address on your iPad. This address is a unique number embedded into your device by the manufacturer and not meant to be altered.

What If Someone Obtains Your iPad MAC Address?

If security is your concern should your MAC address somehow end up in the wrong hands, this address is different than an IP address. MAC addresses are not stored in a central location with personally identifiable information attached. If one were to perform a MAC address search, they may turn up the vendor or manufacturer, but not the owner of the device or their details.
