Light Output:

Epson rates the 730HD as having a maximum 3,000 Lumens light output (for both color and B/W), and up to a 12,000:1 Contrast Ratio. This is supported by a 200 watt lamp with a life of 4,000 hours in standard mode and 5,000 hours in ECO mode.

The lens assembly features manual zoom 1.00-1.2 lens, with an image size range from 33 to 318 inches. The lens manual focal characteristics are: F 1.58 - 1.72, f 16.9 - 20.28 mm. Lens Shift is not provided, but the 730HD does feature automatic vertical and manual Keystone Correction settings: Horizontal/Vertical +/- 30 degrees.

Resolution and Input Signal Compatibility:

NTSC/PAL/480p/720p/1080i/1080p60/1080p24 input compatible. Built-in video processing upscales or downscales all incoming signals to 720p for screen display. NOTE: The Home Cinema 730HD is not 3D compatible.

Input Connections:

The Epson 730HD provides the following input options: HDMI, VGA, Component (via optional Component-to-VGA Adapter Cable), S-Video, and Composite Video. DVI-HDCP equipped sources can also be connected to the Home Cinema 730HD via a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable or connector. 2 USB Inputs are also included: Type A USB port for access to external USB media devices, and a Type B USB port for direct connection to a PC or Laptop.

Picture Modes and Settings:

Four Preset Picture Modes are provided: Dynamic (enhanced brightness and sharpness - such as for viewing live or live-on video TV programming), Living Room (Normal living room viewing conditions - best when drawn curtains are used to dim room light), Cinema (optimized setting for dark room when watching movies), and Game (best when playing video games in a room with ambient light).

In addition to the preset picture modes, the 730HD also features manual setting controls that allow further tweaking of color, contrast, sharpness, color temperature, etc...

Controls:

Color Onsreen Menu accessible via onboard controls located on top of projector as well as via included wireless remote control.

Other Characteristics:

Built-in Speaker: 2 Watts Monaural output. This is loud enough to hear sound in a small room - but an external audio system is definitely preferred for a good home theater experience.

Fan Noise: 29 db (Eco Mode) - 37 dB (Normal Mode). Based on these specifications, Fan noise will definitely be more audible in Normal Mode than in ECO mode, but is it also important to point out that in a darkened room, the ECO mode setting should project more than enough light for a good viewable image - which definitely extends lamp life and saves on the electric bill.

Instant Off: When turning the projector off there is no extended cool-down time necessary - makes it very convenient if you need to pack up the projector after a business or classroom presentation and need to move it to another room or for traveling.

My Take on the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 730HD:

The Epson Home Cinema 730HD is very compact and is designed to easy to set up, and easy to use. It can be table or ceiling mounted, or can be used a portable projector (carrying case optional). The 730HD features both a quick start up and shut down modes and there are connections are provided for several types of input sources, from Blu-ry Disc players to USB flash drives.

The Home Cinema 730HD provides several setup options including a table or rack, or mounted on a ceiling. The projector can place in front or behind the screen.

The Home Cinema 730HD utilizes 3-Chip LCD system (3LCD), which employs separate LCD panels and filters for red, green, and blue primary colors. The Home Cinema 730HD has a native 720p resolution. The light engine includes a high power E-TORL lamp that provides a strong light output so that the projector can even be viewed in rooms that cannot be light controlled. Of course, as more light present in the room, the perceived contrast level and color saturation decreases, but a viewable image can still be projected.

In uses, one thing you might notice is mild Screen Door effect, which is a common LCD artifact, especially if you sit close to the screen. However, since the 730HD is an LCD projector, it doesn't suffer from the Rainbow Effect, which is an artifact that is commonly visible in many DLP video projectors.

The 730HD is designed to used for home entertainment, game play, classroom, or business presentations. With its bright light output it is a good candidate for outdoor evening use, which is popular during the summer. If you are looking for a new home theater projector that is very reasonably priced, that provides all the connectivity you need, projects a lot of light, and the lack of 3D-capability is not an issue, then definitely check out the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 730HD - Suggested Price: $649.00.
