One of the most annoying problems that you are likely to face when listening to digital music on your iPhone is the variation in loudness between songs. It's almost inevitable that inconsistencies in volume levels between songs will develop as you build up your collection. Given that the contents of most digital music collections come from different sources (digital music download stores, ripped tracks from music CDs, etc.), it's no wonder you'll eventually find yourself manually adjusting the volume level more and more.

The good news is that you don't have to suffer this inconvenience on the iPhone -- you can use the Sound Check option. This facility works by measuring the loudness between all of the songs you have synced to your iPhone and then computing a normalized playback volume level for each one. This change ensures that all the songs you play are at the same volume.

Luckily this modification in output volume isn't permanent and so you can revert back to the original volume levels at any time be turning off Sound Check.

This option is disabled by default, but you can easily turn it on if you know where to look. To discover how to configure Sound Check for the iPhone, follow the steps below:

  1. On the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.

  2. On the next screen, you'll see a large list of options for the different areas of the iPhone you can tweak. Scroll down until you see the Music option. Select this by tapping your finger on it to view its sub-menu.

  3. Look for the Sound Check option and enable it by sliding your finger across to the right. Alternatively, you can also just tap the on/off switch.

  4. Now that you have enabled the Sound Check feature, press the iPhone's [Home button] to exit the Music settings and go back to the main screen.

  5. Finally, to start playing your normalized song collection, click on the Music icon and play your songs and playlists just as you would normally do.

Remember, you can disable Sound Check at any time simply by following the above steps to turn this feature off.
