EMP Tek ES10i Powered Subwoofer - Quad View

Shown on this page is four views of ES10i Powered Subwoofer used in the EMP Tek Impression Series home theater speaker system.

Starting on the left is a photo of the front of the ES10i with the speaker grill on.

Next is the same view with the speaker grill removed, exposing the main 10-inch subwoofer driver.

The third photo is a bottom view of the ES10i. The first thing to note about the bottom of the EMP Tek ES10i are the sturdy feet that elevate the bottom of the subwoofer off the floor. The second important feature is the down-firing port. The purpose of this port is to provide further low frequency bass extension for the ES10i. In other words, with both the bottom port and front-facing 10-inch driver, the ES10i can provide more powerful deep bass response than its compact size would indicate.

The last photo in the series is of the rear panel of the ES10i. At the bottom right of the connection panel are the the voltage setting switch, on/off standby/power switch (115 or 230 volts), and the AC receptacle (Power Cord Provided).

Here is a list of the features and specifications of ES10i:

1. Driver: Front Firing 10-inch Diameter With Poly-matrix Cone, Downfiring Port for added bass extension.

2. Frequency Response: 35Hz to 180Hz.

3. Phase: 0 or 180 degrees (synchronizes in-out motion of sub speaker with in-out motion of other speakers in system).

4. Amplifier Type: Class A/B - 100 Watts continuous output capability.

5. Crossover Frequency (frequencies below this point are passed to the subwoofer): 40-180Hz, continuously variable.

6. Power On/Off: Two-way toggle (off/standby).

7. Dimensions: 14 1/8" W x 15" H x 16 1/4" D

8. Weight: 27 lbs

9. Connections: RCA Line ports (stereo or mono), Speaker Level i/o ports.

10. Available Finishes: High-gloss Red Burl or High-gloss Black Ash.

EMP Tek ES10i Powered Subwoofer - Rear View - Controls and Connections

Here is a look at the adjustment controls and connections for the ES10i Powered Subwoofer. The controls are as follows:

Gain: This is also referred to as Volume. This is used to set the sound output of the subwoofer in relation to the other speakers.

Crossover: The crossover control sets the point at which you want the subwoofer to produce low frequency sounds, against the ability of the satellite speakers to reproduce low frequency sounds. The crossover adjustment is variable from 50 to 180Hz. This control should be set at its maximum 180Hz point if you are using the subwoofer crossover controls that are available on many home theater receivers.

ON/OFF/Auto-standby: This allows the user to set the subwoofer so that it activates fully when it detects and incoming low frequency signal. It is important to note that the master power switch located on the very bottom right also needs to be in the ON position for the Auto-on/Standby function to work.

Phase Switch: This control matches the in/out subwoofer driver motion to the satellite speakers. This control has two positions 0 or 180 degrees.

Also shown on this photo are the input/output connections available on the ES10i Powered Subwoofer. Shown in this photo are the Input/Output connections, which include 2 line level/RCA jacks (1in/1out), and 1 set of standard speaker inputs and 1 set of speaker output terminals.

This subwoofer can be connected in two ways. The easiest way is to connect the subwoofer line output from a home theater receiver to the RCA line inputs on the ES10i.

The second connection option on the ES10i include using left/right speaker connections (labeled as high level connections) from receivers or amplifiers that do not have a dedicated subwoofer line output. In this type of setup, the subwoofer accepts the entire signal that goes to the main left and right channel speakers, but only utilizes the low frequencies for itself and passes the remaining frequencies to main speakers via traditional speaker output connections.

If you would like to see an even closer look at the controls and connections of the ES10i, check out my supplementary close-up photo.
