Dyson Develops New Ventilator in 10 Days

A critical shortage is being met with fast innovation

Why This Matters:

With the COVID-19 pandemic still spreading across the globe, hospitals are desperate for life-saving technology. Dyson’s new design could put thousands of new ventilators in hospitals within a month.

Vacuum and hair-care product company Dyson has designed and built the CoVent, a new ventilator, in 10 days.

Desperate need: COVID-19 patients can suffer from difficulty breathing and, in some cases, need machines, like ventilators, to breath for them. Hospitals have been reporting shortages for weeks, and as the situation intensifies in the UK and hot spots in the U.S., overrun hospitals are desperate for these life-saving devices.

Behind the scenes: Dyson founder, CEO, and inventor James Dyson received a call from UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who asked for Dyson’s help in delivering 10,000 ventilators to UK hospitals.

Almost ready: In an email to employees, supplied to Lifewire by Dyson, James Dyson wrote that the CoVent can be manufactured “quickly, efficiently, and at volume.” He added, "[CoVent] is designed to address the specific clinical needs of Covid-19 patients, and it is suited to a variety of clinical settings. The company designed the new medical device in cooperation with TPP, The Technology Partnership.

When will hospitals get it? It could start shipping in the UK as soon as next month. In addition to the initial 10,000 unit order, Dyson wrote that they will donate 5,000 CoVent ventilators to international COVID-19 efforts. “The race is now on to get it into production,” wrote Dyson.

Bottom Line: Hospitals, healthcare providers, and supplies are being stretched beyond the limit, but companies like Dyson are innovating in record time, repurposing production lines, and redirecting supplies to assist in the fight against COVID-19.
