Vimeo is an online video-sharing site that features videos, animations, short films, how-to and art-quality videos from people around the world. Here's how to download Vimeo video for watching while offline.

Download Videos From Vimeo

You can watch videos on Vimeo without signing up for an account. If you do sign up for an account (see below), you start to get the benefit of downloading some movies for offline viewing.

If downloading is available for the video, you will see a button under the video description that says Download. Click this download button and the video will begin to download on your computer.

Only a limited number of Vimeo videos are available for downloaded with Vimeo's Basic membership plan.

Vimeo activates the ability to download any videos that are available to download after you purchase a Plus, PRO, Business, or Premium membership. Refresh your browser after you've purchased your subscription to see the download button. When downloading, a pop-up window will give you several options for different formats and resolutions, including SD or HD.

  • Vimeo Basic: Free
  • Vimeo Plus: $7 per month
  • Vimeo Pro: $20 per month
  • Vimeo Business: $50 per month

Download Videos Using Online Video Downloaders

Instead of using apps to download Vimeo videos, you can use online services such as ClipConverter, Amoyshare, and Savefrom. These services make it possible to download most online videos, including some at Vimeo.

Most are free services, with upgrade options, and require no special software for your computer. All are compatible with Windows and macOS.

While these online video services are free, their web pages are often filled with ads with download links that are designed to confuse you so that you will download the ad's products, rather than the software. Read the fine print carefully and avoid clicking links or downloading products you do not need.

Enter the url for the video you want to download in the second box on this page on Keepvid. The box that says OPEN, above the url box is an ad, and will start a download for another product to your computer.

To try this method, copy the URL of the Vimeo page that contains the video you would like to download. In a new browser tab, open any of the online clip converters listed above and paste the URL of the video in the space provided. Once entered, the service will default to the best format and quality options for your video, and also provides the ability to customize those options. If in doubt, select the defaults. The MP4 format is compatible with most video players.

Click Start at the bottom left of the page, and conversion begins. The time the download takes will depend on the length of the video you've selected.

  • ClipConverter: Free
  • Amoyshare: Free 30 Day Trial, Premium version is $4.99 per month, $19.99 per year, or Lifetime for $29.99
  • SaveClipBro: Free
  • Savefrom: Free, $19.99 for HD quality and unlimited downloads

Record the Video From Your Computer

Rather than downloading a video, you can make a new recording of the video as it plays on your computer screen. As your screen is playing the video, the software will record the video and save it as a video file. This method will record all the activity that is happening on your screen, so make sure to play the video in full-screen mode, so that your video will not capture your tabs or other applications open on your screen. Full screen mode is available by clicking the square with four arrows at the bottom left side of the Vimeo video.

On a Mac with macOS Mojave or newer installed, press Shift-Command (⌘)-5 record video. Or you can record the screen with QuickTime Player.

Download Videos Using Browser Extensions

There are also extensions you can add to your Google Chrome browser that allow you to download videos. These extensions work similar to the online video downloaders, pulling information from the video opened on your web page. Once you add the extension, it will appear in the upper right side of your browser.

We tested the following two extensions, and we encourage you to download them at your own risk. While each one worked, they did not work consistently. Uninstalling and reinstalling the extension can help the downloader work more efficiently if you are downloading multiple videos. Both of these are free.
