The AIM for iPhone (Free Edition) instant messaging app recently got a facelift, and along with standard access to IM with friends, family and colleagues, you can now engage contacts in group chat, make status updates, set your availability and more. According to Apple’s App Store , AIM Free Edition has been improved with less bugs and a faster networking system, allowing you to keep the conversation while out and about on your iPhone or iPod Touch devices.

How to Download AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch
Before you can get started, you will need to follow these easy steps to download the AIM app to your iPhone or iPod Touch:

  1. Locate the App Store on your device.
  2. Tap on the search bar (the field located at the top) and type in "AIM"
  3. Choose the appropriate app, AIM (Free Edition), as shown above.
  4. Click the blue "Free" button to continue.

AIM for iPhone, iPod System Requirements
Make sure your iPhone or iPod Touch meets the following requirements before you begin, or you will not be able to use this app:

  • 19.1 MB available space
  • iOS 4.0 or later
  • WiFi or Mobile Web Access
  • AIM Account

Next, tap the green "Install" button to begin your download of AIM for iPhone and iPod Touch users. You might be required to enter your Apple ID and password if you have not installed an app recently. Once the installation process has begun, it may take a few minutes to finish depending on your Internet speed/connection.

Launch the AIM App

Once AIM for iPhone is installed, locate the app icon (which appears as an orange square with a lowercase script letter “a”) and tap the image to launch the app on your iPhone or iPod device. This will start the instant messaging software and allow you to setup your new app software.

When the AIM app has loaded for the first time, you will see a dialogue window appear asking if you would like to receive notifications when you have receive an instant message or any other updates this particular app offers. Click "Ok" to allow receipt of notifications or press "Don't Allow" to block any notifications from being delivered.

If you have already installed the AIM for iPhone app, you can also enable or disable notifications from your app profile. Read More: AIM App Profile and Notifications.

How to Sign in to AIM for iPhone

Next, the AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch login screen will appear. If you do not have an AIM account, you can create one from this screen by tapping the blue "Create an AIM account" button at the bottom of the screen.

Users can also click the MobileMe and Facebook icons to sign in with their login information from both these services.

To create a new AIM account for this app, you will need to provide the following pieces of information:

  • Email address
  • First name
  • Last name
  • Date of Birth
  • Password

You can enter this information by clicking on the appropriate text field and entering the details using your touchscreen QWERTY keyboard. When you click the field, the keyboard will appear, allowing you to type in the above required information.

At the bottom of this screen, you will notice a link "Terms and Conditions." This will allow you to read the policies and terms which govern your use of this app software. We highly recommend reading these policies, as they will let you know about any liabilities you take on from using the AIM app plus how your data may be used.

How to Find Your Instant Messages on AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch

Once you are logged in to the AIM app, you will notice the above screen with your control panel located at the bottom of the screen. This screen is like your navigating screen, where you are able to cruise to other pages the AIM for iPhone offers by tapping the page icons nested in this control panel. Read on to learn about each page you can access from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

How to Find Instant Messages on AIM
By clicking the word balloon icon in the lower right corner of the screen, AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch users can locate any incoming instant messages and archived chats.

How to Delete Messages in AIM
After you have ended a chat, you may want to remove the conversation from your messages screen to make way for new IMs. In the upper right corner, a button titled "Edit" will appear. Click the button and you will notice a series of red icons will appear next to each conversation. Click the red icon next to the message you wish to delete, then press the red "Close" button which appears to the right of the contact or chat.

Click the "Done" button, which now appears where the "Edit" button was, to return to the contacts list.

How to Set Your Availability in AIM for iPhone
Within the AIM app, users can also set their availability from the messages screen. Click the circle icon in the upper right corner to gain access to the availability drop-down menu, then select the desired setting:

  • Available (green icon) lets people know you are able to chat
  • Busy (red icon) signifies you cannot chat at the moment.
  • Invisible mode (silver icon) allows you to remain online while appearing offline to contacts. This lets you pick people to exchange IMs with with limited interruption from others.

Your AIM App Buddy List

Just like on the desktop instant messaging client, the AIM app for iPhone and iPod Touch users also includes a buddy list under the people icon, as illustrated above. On this page, you can add contacts and view those already on your contacts list. In addition to exchanging instant messages with these people, you can also view their profile and updates.

How to Add Friends on the AIM App
Click the plus sign icon in the top right corner of the screen. Another screen will pop up with a text field at the top. Tap the field and enter your friend's email address or AIM screen name to locate their profile and add them to your account. Please note, you are only able to add contacts to your account if they are an AIM user. You can also add friends from Facebook Chat and Google Talk from your AIM profile page.

How to Locate Friends on AIM
To find friends who appear on your AIM for iPhone buddy list, use the search field which is nested at the top of the screen, under the contacts tab. You will then be able to see if a particular person is online and available to exchange messages.

Create a Favorites List in the AIM App
iPhone and iPod Touch users can make accessing their favorite contacts easier by creating a Favorites list in the AIM app. Go to the "Favorites" tab on your buddy list, and click the plus sign icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Then click on the screen name of a contact to add them to favorites.

How to Remove Contacts from Your Favorites List
Need to remove a favorite? Click the "Edit" button in the upper left corner and click the red icon which appears to the left of the contact you wish to remove. Then, tap the red "Remove" button to delete them from your favorite's list.

How to Send an Instant Message on AIM for iPhone App

To start an instant message or group chat in AIM for iPhone and iPod Touch users, click the plus sign icon nested in your control panel at the bottom of the screen. From here, your online contacts list will appear. Tap the contact's name on your device screen to launch an IM window addressed to that contact.

You can also launch a chat session with a contact while browsing the buddy list in the AIM app. Simply click on the contact's name to start an IM.

How to Send an Instant Message on AIM App
Once you have selected a contact to chat with, a window will appear with a text field at the bottom of the screen. Clicking this field will enable your touchscreen QWERTY keyboard, allowing you to type your message. Click the blue ''Send'' button to forward your message to your contact.

How to Share Photos, Location with AIM Contacts
To share your GPS location or photos with contacts in the AIM for iPhone/iPod Touch app, click the paperclip icon which appears to the left of your IM window's text field. Then, select from "Share Photo" and "Share Location."

If you wish to share a photo, you can opt to take a photo using your device's camera, choose from your photo library or send the last photo taken.

If you wish to share your location, you must first have location sharing enabled on the AIM app. A notification window will prompt you to allow location sharing if it is not enabled. Once enabled, a map will be created and attached to your IM.

The arrow icon, located left of center, on your AIM app control panel is where all your social notifications will appear, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram updates. The settings icon in the upper right corner of this page allows you to set which notifications you receive.

The last and final icon is the profile icon, located in the bottom right of the screen in your AIM app control panel. This is where a number of important settings and features are stored you should know about.

How to Sign Out of AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch
To sign off and stop receiving instant messages from the AIM app, scroll to the bottom of the profile page and click the red "Sign Out" button.

Adding a Image/Buddy Icon to AIM App
In the top left corner of the screen under your name, you will see a small image window with the words "Edit." Click this window to choose either to take a photo with your iPhone or iPod Touch camera or an image from your device's library.

How to Edit Your Status Messages in AIM
To update your status from this page, click the field titled "What’s Happening Now." Your QWERTY touchscreen keyboard will pop up and you are able to update what is going on in your life at that point in time.

How to Block Incoming AIM Alerts
From the profile, two important features you ought to know about: Do Not Disturb and Quiet Hours. For immediate relief from alerts, notifications and sounds, the Do Not Disturb feature will block everything until you disable the setting in your profile. Meanwhile, to avoid receiving instant messages and notifications at all hours of the night, setting your Quiet Hours lets the AIM for iPhone app know when it is appropriate and inappropriate to alert you.

Sound Settings in AIM for iPhone, iPod Touch
Want to change your AIM app sounds or disable sounds from playing altogether? You can stop the noise by visiting the "Sound Settings" menu, and either turning off sounds or changing your sounds from a menu of available noises.

Push Notification Settings in AIM App
Whether you wish to turn off push notifications for AIM or what information is included in the alerts, you can do both through the "Push Notification" menu. Select from brief notifications, to displaying only the sender's name, name and message, or everything and the kitchen sink.

How to Add Facebook Chat, Gtalk to AIM
Want to add Facebook and Google Talk contacts to AIM on your iPhone or iPod? The "Chat Networks" menu allows you to enable both, adding your contacts from both of these instant messaging services directly to your buddy list.

Changing Your Name in the AIM iPhone App
Want to change how your name is displayed in AIM? Clicking the "Edit Profile" menu allows you to change your first and last name in the app.

Sorting Buddy List Contacts
The default setting for your AIM app buddy list is by presence, that is, availability to chat. However, you can change the setting to display buddies by name regardless of availability by selecting the appropriate setting in the "Sort Contacts Menu."

See, Delete Blocked Contacts in AIM
Whether you have blocked a contact on your computer or on your iPhone or iPod Touch, you can view these contacts in the "Blocked Users" menu on your profile. To remove a contact from your block list, click the "Edit" button in the upper right corner, and click the red icon which appears next to that contact's name. Then, click the red "Unblock" button which appears to the right of that contact's name.
