Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology with more flexibility in the presentation of sound in a movie or home theater space. It allows for sounds to be treated as "objects" that the system can position in the listening space beyond the limitations of traditional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound channels.

As with any new technology that makes its way into the home theater realm, there's always an adoption period.

New hardware is often required, and there is the inevitable lag in availability of content that takes advantage of the new technology. Dolby Atmos is no exception.

Adoption of Dolby Atmos

Since its unveiling in the Summer of 2014, almost all mid-range and high-end home theater receivers include Dolby Atmos decoding, as well as some home theater-in-a-box systems primarily offered by Onkyo.

However, what is really surprising is that Yamaha, Samsung, and LG offer Dolby Atmos-enabled sound bars, with LG even including a built-in Dolby Atmos sound bar with select OLED TVs.

Many consumers, however, have not yet been able to justify the expense or possible reconfiguration of their home theater systems because there hasn't been enough Dolby Atmos encoded content available.

This is definitely changing, and more Blu-ray titles that utilize Dolby Atmos continue to be released at a steady pace. The following is a list of some key available Blu-ray and streaming releases that are Dolby Atmos encoded.

What We Can Expect for Future Releases

It would be great if we could get Dolby Atmos re-issues on Blu-ray of such films as "Brave," "Godzilla 2014," "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and " Pacific Rim," all of which were released theatrically with Dolby Atmos soundtracks. In fact, "Brave" was the first film to be released theatrically with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

However, it is unlikely that the movie studios involved will go back and re-issue past films on Blu-ray that originally had Dolby Atmos theatrical soundtracks—at least not until there is a large base of consumers with Dolby Atmos home theater systems that demand it.

Another factor to take into consideration is competing technologies like Auro Audio and DTS with their own immersive surround sound formats. Studios may be faced with trying to figure out which of those formats would justify new or re-issued Blu-ray Disc releases.

Also, check out a list of all theatrical releases with Dolby Atmos soundtracks, including forthcoming releases, to see how many films Dolby and the studios could draw from for future Blu-ray Disc re-issues.
