Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Disc Releases

Movie releases on Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, and streaming with Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that provides more flexibility in the presentation of sound in a movie or home theater space. It allows for sounds to be treated as "objects" that the system can position in the listening space beyond the limitations of traditional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound channels, including the addition of sound coming from overhead using in-ceiling or vertically firing speakers.

Products That Feature Dolby Atmos

Since its introduction in the Summer of 2014, almost all mid-range and high-end home theater receivers include Dolby Atmos decoding, as well as some home-theater-in-a-box systems primarily offered by Onkyo.

Dolby Atmos is also available on select soundbars from:

LG also includes a built-in Dolby Atmos sound bar with select OLED TVs. Although not quite the same experience as having a multi-speaker Dolby Atmos speaker setup, a Dolby Atmos soundbar brings a taste of its benefits to more consumers.

Most Blu-ray Disc players are compatible with Dolby Atmos and it is also possible to stream Dolby Atmos audio via the internet.

The Bottom Line

Dolby Atmos definitely elevates the home theater experience, and there is a lot of content available, but there are some additional things to take into consideration when searching for titles.

  • Some films are released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos sound mix but don't provide a Dolby Atmos mix on the standard Blu-ray version, opting instead for a DTS-HD Master Audio mix. This is a disappointment for those that have a strong commitment to Blu-ray but have not upgraded to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
  • Competing technologies like Auro Audio and DTS offer their own immersive surround sound formats. Studios sometimes have to make a decisions as to whether to release a film or program in Dolby Atmos or another immersive audio format.
  • 3D fans that view content on 3D Blu-ray Discs, Dolby Atmos may be offered on the 2D Blu-ray version of the title but not necessarily on the 3D Blu-ray version. Considering that Dolby Atmos is a great match for 3D visual effects, viewers are getting shortchanged as a result of such a decision. Note the disc specifications on the product packaging.
  • For those that are still buying and playing DVDs, Dolby Atmos is not included, due to the limitations of the DVD format. This means you won't find any DVDs with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack option or DVD player that can decode such discs.
