Designing a Moto 360 Smartwatch

How to use the Moto Maker to customize the watch to your liking

Motorola's second generation Moto 360 smartwatch comes in four styles: two sizes for men, a new women's collection, and a sports version. Also new to this model is an edge-to-edge screen with a slimmed down bezel. At the time of its release, Motorola said the Moto 360 had the largest screen-to-case ratio of any smartwatch. Even bigger news is that this Android Wear-powered smartwatch is compatible with the iPhone, though you'll miss out on some Android-centric features.

The Moto 360 (2nd gen) comes with a built-in heart rate monitor, an ambient light sensor, and Wi-Fi; the sensor and the Wi-Fi can be disabled to save battery life. This smartwatch is dust and water-resistant.

You can customize all of the design elements on your Moto 360 using the Moto Maker design tool, except for the sports version. The Moto 360 Sport does have various band options, though. Once you choose your style (men's vs. women's), you can then customize its colors, textures, and band material.

While you're building your watch, you can preview it in 3D and spin it around 360 degrees so you can see it from every angle. You can also zoom in to take a look at every detail before your place your Moto 360 order. All of the Moto 360 (2nd gen) smart watches come with a compact wireless charger.

The Moto Maker is fun to play around with and we're happy with the Moto 360 smartwatch that we created with it. Once you have your smartwatch on hand (or wrist), it's time to download the best Android Wear apps. You'll get notifications from your top apps on your watch, and even use voice commands to respond to texts and other messages.

The men's watch comes two sizes: 42 and 46 mm, and the larger version costs an extra $50. This size refers to the case, which wraps around the watch face. Options for both sizes include a leather or metal band with finishes available in black, silver, and gold.

Bezel Colors and Finishes

Whether you choose the men's or women's version, start out by selecting a bezel color. (The bezel is the part that surrounds the watch face, just like on a monitor or HDTV display.) The men's bezel can be silver, gold, or black in either a flat (chamfer) finish or micro knurl texture ($20 extra). The women's options have a more subtle style than the men's. Available colors include silver, gold, and rose gold, in either a flat (peak) finish or a micro cut texture ($20 extra).

Next, choose a case (the part that goes around the side of the watch face) color. The case has the same color options as the bezel: silver, gold, or black for men, and silver, gold or rose gold for women. The gold and rose gold options cost $30 extra.

Bands for the men's version are available in cognac or black leather and black, silver or gold metal. The women's watch comes in stone gray or blush leather, and silver, bronze or gold metal. The metal bands cost an extra $50. Women can also opt for a double wrap leather band ($10 add-on) in blush. (See it in the second picture.)

Flower Face

When it comes to the watch face, the same options are available for both the men and women versions. There are more than a dozen analog and digital face choices, and you can also add weather, calendar, pedometer, and other app widgets. Of course, this watch is fully digital, so you can switch between faces at any time, depending on your mood. While you do need to select a watch face, you don't have to commit to it once the watch arrives.

This watch face design, with flowers in the background, is one of the most striking options available for your Moto 360.

Sport

While you can customize the Moto 360 Sport in the Moto Maker, the band comes in three colors: white, black, and orange. It's dust and water resistant, so you can use it safely while exercising and sweating, but not when swimming or otherwise submerged in water. This watch, like the other versions, includes an optical heart rate monitor, a screen that automatically adjusts to ambient light, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
