Even the most inexpensive home theater receiver can provide a suitable surround sound experience for most consumers, but for some, only a high-end home theater receiver will do. One high-end unit that should satisfy even the most demanding home theater fan is the Denon AVR-X6200W.

To start, the AVR-X6200 features the familiar Denon front panel, which includes a large status display, large rotary input select, and master volume control, along with additional, easily accessible controls, most of which are located behind a flip-down door.

Channel Configuration and Power

The AV-X6200W provides a built-in 9.2 channel configuration but is expandable up to 13.2 channels via the addition of external amplifier(s). Denon states that the built-in amplifiers can output 140 watts each (measured using an 8-ohm load, from 20 hz-20kHz, at .05% THD level).

For more details on what the above stated technical terms describing the power ratings mean with respect to real-world conditions, refer to my article: Understanding Amplifier Power Output Specifications. However, the AVR-X6200W definitely has enough clean power output for just about any size room.

Audio Decoding and Processing

In addition to incorporating most of the well-established Dolby and DTS-based surround sound formats, the AVR-X6200W also has the ability to handle all three of the latest immersive surround sound formats which include: Dolby Atmos (supports (5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2, 7.1.4, 9.1.2 configurations) with Dolby Surround Upmixer (provides Dolby Atmos-like sound field for non-Atmos encoded content), DTS:X, and Auro 3D Audio decoding.

However, it is also important to note that while Dolby Atmos and Dolby Surround Upmixer are already installed, DTS:X must be added via a free firmware update, and Auro3D audio is available via a $199 firmware update.

Connectivity - Inputs

The AVR-X620W has abundant audio and video connectivity, which includes the following:

NOTE: The Component and Composite video inputs allow connection of older source components, such as VCRs, Cable Boxes, and DVD players/recorders that may not have HDMI outputs.

  • 2 digital coaxial and 2 digital optical audio inputs.
  • 6 pairs of analog audio inputs.
  • 1 set of 5.1/7/1 multi-channel audio inputs. This connection option allows for connection of older DVD players that provide DVD-Audio and/or SACD playback but may not have HDMI outputs.
  • 1 Phono input for connection a turntable - definitely a plus for vinyl record fans!
  • 2 USB ports (1 front/1 rear) for accessing compatible digital media files on flash drives or other compatible USB-connectable devices.

Connectivity - Outputs

  • 3 HDMI out (2 parallel and 1 independent 2nd Zone).
  • 1 set of component video outputs.
  • 2 composite video outputs (one can be used for Zone 2 use).
  • 13.2 channel preamp outputs - These can be used to connect external amplifiers, ranging from a single channel (mono) or any combination up to 13 channels, as well as 2 Subwoofer line outputs (the .2 in 9.2, 11.2, or 13.2)
  • Zone 2 and Zone 3 audio preamp outputs.
  • Clearly labeled, color-coded, and easy-to-connect speaker terminals are included that run horizontally along the bottom of the AVR-X6200's rear connection panel. This makes it very easy to insert speaker wire to each terminal.

Video Processing

Along with extensive audio features, along with audio and video connectivity, the AVR-X6200W also provides up to 1080p and 4K upscaling.

Even though this AVR-X6200W is a high-end home theater receiver, Denon provides tools that make audio and video setup easy, including:
