Almost everyone deletes voicemails that you're done listening to and don't need to save for later. The iPhone's Visual Voicemail feature makes it easy to only delete the voicemail on your iPhone that you want to get rid of. But did you know that sometimes the messages you think are deleted aren't actually gone? Read on to learn all about deleting—and truly getting rid of—voicemail on the iPhone.

How to Delete Voicemail on iPhone

If you've got a voicemail on your iPhone that you need longer need, delete it by following these steps:

  2. Tap the Voicemail button in the bottom right corner.

  3. Find the voicemail you want to delete. Tap it once to reveal the options or swipe right to left to reveal to Delete button.

You can also bulk delete multiple voicemails at the same time. To do that, follow the first two steps in the list above and then:

  3. Tap Delete in the bottom right corner and all of the selected voicemails will be wiped out.

When Is A Deleted iPhone Voicemail Not Really Deleted?

Even though the steps listed above remove voicemails from your voicemail inbox and you've tapped Delete, the voicemails you think are deleted may not be truly gone. That's because iPhone voicemails aren’t fully deleted until they’re also cleared.

Voicemails that you "delete" are not immediately erased. Instead, they're marked to be deleted later and moved out of your inbox. Think of it as the Trash or Recycling Bin on your desktop or laptop computer. When you delete a file it gets sent there, but the file still exists until you empty the Trash. Voicemail on the iPhone works basically the same way.

The voicemails you delete are still stored in your account on your phone company's servers. Many phone companies remove voicemails marked for deletion every 30 days. But if you don't want to wait, you may want to make sure your voicemails are deleted for good right away. If so, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Phone icon.

  2. Tap the Voicemail icon in the bottom right.

  3. If you have deleted messages that haven’t been cleared, the Visual Voicemail list will include an item at the bottom called Deleted Messages. Tap it.

  4. In that screen, tap the Clear All button to permanently delete the messages listed there.

How to Undelete Voicemails on iPhone

Because voicemails aren't truly deleted unless they're cleared, this also means you can often undelete a voicemail and get it back. This is only possible if the voicemail is still listed in Deleted Messages, as mentioned in the last section. If the voicemail you want to retrieve is there, follow the steps in this article to undelete it
