The iPhone's Visual Voicemail feature makes it easy to delete only the voicemail on your iPhone that you want to get rid of while retaining the rest. However, sometimes the messages you think are deleted aren't actually gone. Learn how to delete—and truly get rid of—voicemail on the iPhone. Instructions in this article apply to iPhones running iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9, or iOS 8. How to Delete Voicemail on iPhone If you have a voicemail on your iPhone that you no longer need, delete it. Tap the Phone app to launch it. If you're already in the app and just listened to a voicemail, skip to Step 3. Tap the Voicemail button in the lower-right corner of the screen. Find the voicemail you want to delete. Tap it once to reveal the options or swipe right to left to reveal the Delete button. Lifewire Tap Delete to remove the voicemail. How to Delete Several Voicemails At Once on iPhone To delete more than one voicemail simultaneously: On the Voicemail screen, tap Edit. Tap each voicemail you want to delete. When Deleted iPhone Voicemails Aren't Really Deleted Even if you remove voicemails from your voicemail inbox, the voicemails you think are deleted may not be gone. That's because iPhone voicemails aren't deleted until they're also cleared. Voicemails that you delete are not immediately erased. Instead, they're marked to be deleted later and moved out of your inbox. Think of it as the Trash or Recycling Bin on your desktop or laptop computer. When you delete a file, it gets sent there, but the file still exists until you empty the Trash. Voicemail on the iPhone works basically the same way. The voicemails you delete are stored in your account on the phone company servers. Many phone companies remove voicemails marked for deletion every 30 days. But if you don't want to wait, you may want to make sure your voicemails are deleted for good right away. To permanently delete voicemails: Tap the Phone icon. Tap the Voicemail icon. If you have deleted messages that haven’t cleared, go to the Visual Voicemail list and tap Deleted Messages. Lifewire Tap Clear All to permanently delete the messages listed there. How to Undelete Voicemails on iPhone Because voicemails aren't deleted until they're cleared, you can often undelete a voicemail and get it back. This is only possible if the voicemail is still listed in Deleted Messages. If the voicemail you want to retrieve is there, you can retrieve it. Go to the Voicemail screen and tap Deleted Messages. Tap the voicemail you want to undelete. Tap Undelete to return it to the Voicemail screen.
