How to Create a Slideshow With Google Photos

Show off your favorite pics with a Google Photo slideshow

Google Photos easily allows you to back up your photos, arrange photos and movies into albums, and even detect faces in photos so you can find the ones you want to show off to friends and family. It also has a great way of sharing your photos via a slideshow.

Whether you want to share photos of your dog on your phone or the new baby on your Google Home Hub, Google Photos lets you make a simple slideshow. This lets you show your besties all of the photos from your birthday, instead of just one. It's a feature that's built right into the albums of your photos stored with Google Photos.

These apply to the Google Photos website and the mobile app.

  1. In Google Photos, open the album which has the photos you want in a slideshow.

Alternatively you can create a new album specifically for your slideshow.

  2. Select a photo.

When you choose photos, you can only select photos inside of one album. When you select specific photos inside that album for a slideshow, you'll only see the ones you've selected. However, if you want to show off every photo in an album, you can bypass selecting specific photos and go right to the overflow (three dots) icon and that will trigger the slideshow.

  3. Select the overflow (three dots) icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

  4. Choose Slideshow from the drop-down menu.

  5. The slideshow will show all photos in the album in order and start automatically with a 5-second fade between photos.

Viewing a Google Photos Slideshow

While you can choose the photos that appear in a Google Photos slideshow, you can't otherwise customize it. The slideshow starts automatically, and you can't change the amount of time a photo is shown before fading into the next one. You also can't add or change music. All you can do is choose the album and the first photo of the slideshow.

Additionally, you can't change the order of the photos. If you create a new album for your slideshow, then the photos will display from oldest to newest no matter what order you use when adding them to the album. You also can't share your slideshow directly. You can show it off on a device that has Google Photos, or cast it to a Chromecast to show off your photos on a TV, but those are the only options.

This means that if you want a slideshow with all of the bells and whistles, you'll want to look elsewhere. Thankfully the Play Store has several alternatives available that will allow you to add music, or better fine-tune the settings of your slideshow.

It's also worth remembering you won't be saving your slideshow separately. It works directly out of the album your slideshow photos are stored in (which is why you may want to create a new album for your slideshow).

However, if all that you really need is something that is simple, and easy to use, then the slideshow from Google Photos is the best option. You can set up a slideshow in just moments, and it may already be installed on your phone.
