How To Create The Artwork For Adobe Brush CC

Adobe Brush CC turns photos or sketches into brushes.

Let’s start “Old School”.  All you need to do is to do is to open a notebook or grab a blank piece of paper. Next use a pen or a pencil to draw out a pattern. In the above image I drew a series of dots in a Moleskein notebook. Next, using your device’s camera, take a picture of the drawing. This will be the base for the brush. If you are using an Android device you can either move the picture to your CreativeCloud account or to your iOS device’s Camera Roll.

To access your photo, tap the + sign on the left side of the interface and open the photo from one of the locations shown.

How To Clean Up The Illustrator Brush In Adobe Brush CC

Use Refine to bring detail back to your brush.

Though my image is a series of dots, the preview is showing me what looks like a smear. To get back to the dots tap Refine . When the image opens, tap the Subtract switch, which makes the background transparent. The Threshold slider sets the black threshold in the image. Sliding it to the right increases the value and the area fills with black. Slide it to the left until your image appears.

How To Crop The Illustrator Brush Area In Adobe Brush CC

Crop out areas and artifacts you don't need.

You also might want to make the Brush Area a bit smaller. To accomplish this, tap the Crop tool. If you have a number of sketches in your photo this tool will help you to isolate the sketch.

There are three handles you can use: Tail, Body and Head. The Tail and Body handles set the start and end points for the Brush. If you move them, the Preview will show you the result. The Body handle will remove any unused space at the top and the bottom of the Brush.

You can also use your fingers to nudge the artwork around to rotate it, zoom in and reposition the artwork in the Crop area.
