While AIM Chat is no longer featured, group chat remains a viable way to message multiple AIM users at once without having multiple tabs or IM windows.

AIM group chat rooms provide users with an easy way to pull all your contacts together, in chat room format. In this illustrated tutorial, you will learn how to start you own AIM group chat in just three easy steps.

Getting Started

To begin, select "Menu" from your Buddy List, and then select "New Group Chat." You can also use the following keyboard shortcut: Alt+C

When you have completed these options, click "Send" to proceed with your AIM group chat room.

Next, your AIM group chat will load on your desktop. An invitation will be sent asking your contacts to join you in the AIM group chat room. At that point, they can decide to accept or decline the invitation.

To add new contacts while in your AIM group chat, enter their screenname in the box highlighted in the illustration above, and click "Add." An invitation will be sent to that contact.

Just like AIM chat rooms, the group chat functions much the same way:

  • AIM users enter text in the field provided at bottom
  • Emoticon and text controls allow users to personalize the experience
  • Screennames for all participants will appear in the right-hand buddy list
