Corel Corporation Publishing Software

An overview of the company's product offerings

Corel Corporation logo

Founded in 1985, Corel Corporation has long been known primarily for its graphics software and digital imaging products. Corel creates products frequently considered as strong alternatives to Adobe and Microsoft. Once a top choice for page layout, Corel Ventura — version 10 was released in 2002 — is not currently a frontrunner in the Corel product line and has been replaced by CorelDRAW, which offers many of the same features as Ventura. CorelDRAW, much like Adobe Illustrator, is often used for graphics-intensive page layout tasks.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is Corel's answer to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The suite includes:

  • Corel After Shot 3 HDR, for RAW photo editing
  • Corel CAPTURE, for screen captures
  • Corel CONNECT, for finding additional content
  • CorelDRAW, for vector drawing and page layout
  • Corel Font Manager, for handling large numbers of fonts
  • Corel PHOTO-PAINT, for image editing
  • Corel PowerTRACE, for bitmap-to-vector tracing

Supporting the design tools, the suite offers access to additional content, which includes 10,000 clip art and digital images, 1,000 fonts (TrueType and OpenType), 2,000 hi-res photos, frames, and more.

Corel PaintShop Pro

Formerly Jasc Paint Shop Pro, an extremely popular low-cost alternative to Photoshop, Corel has added a lot of digital photography features to the original package. In addition to photo editing and enhancing, PaintShop Pro also includes creative and simple graphic design tools, artistic text, and photo editing tools.

Technical Graphics Software

Corel offers software geared more toward technical projects as well. CorelDRAW Technical Suite is software designed to handle technical illustration and drafting tasks, including diagrams and schematics. The suite includes:

  • Corel CAPTURE
  • Corel CONNECT
  • Corel DESIGNER
  • CorelDRAW
  • XVL Studio Corel Edition

WordPerfect Office

This venerable name in word processing and longtime rival to Microsoft Word, WordPerfect Office is an expanded suite of staple office software tools:

  • WordPerfect is familiar as a word processor.
  • Quattro Pro creates spreadsheets.
  • Presentations is the suite's slideshow and presentation software.

Beyond these, WordPerfect Office also includes AfterShot 3 for editing and managing photos; WordPerfect Lightning, a note-taking and collaboration tool; and eBook Publisher. Like the CorelDRAW suite, WordPerfect Office also provides supporting content, such as TrueType fonts, training videos, clip art, templates, photos, and more.

More Corel Software Products

Corel offers further software for design and creative pursuits. Corel Painter is a natural-media painting and illustration software designed to mimic traditional artists' tools. Its Mirage software lets you animate photos, and VideoStudio allows you to edit video as well as add effects.

Corel Software Trials

Corel offers a fully functional 30-day trial edition of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. Many other Corel products, including Corel PaintShop, Corel WordPerfect Office, and CorelDRAW Technical Suite, are also offered in trial editions.

Corel Ventura 10

Corel Ventura 10 was the last version of this page design software, published in 2002. Now it has been rolled into CorelDRAW, which has incorporated many of its tools and features.

Corel Ventura 10 excelled at long document publishing. XML import, publish to PDF, table tags, prepress/preflight options, and bitmap effects were some of the enhancements to the software. Version 10 improved the software's compatibility with both Adobe and Corel's Graphics programs.
