The WAV file format is great for maximizing audio quality, but not so great for file sizes, which are often huge with WAV files since the audio is often uncompressed.

While this might be great if you're a professional user who requires the highest audio quality possible, it can be quite the space hog for the typical user. If you intend on transferring music to an MP3 player, smartphone, etc., then you'll need to convert your WAV files.

Below is a look at how to use the free Switch audio file converter program to convert WAV to MP3.

How to Convert WAV to MP3 With Switch

  1. Download Switch and install it using the default install options.
    1. Note: You might be asked to install some other unrelated programs along with this WAV file converter, but you definitely don't have to in order to use Switch. Any other options within the installer are just ads.
  2. Use the green Add File(s) button in Switch to find and select any WAV files that you need converted to MP3. You can select more than one by holding down the Ctrl key.
  3. Once they've been added to the queue, select a "Save to folder" location from the bottom of the program. Use the Browse button if you want to change it from the default folder.
  4. Right below that is the "Output Format" option, which should be .mp3 by default. If not, click/tap that menu to select .mp3.
  5. Use the Convert button on the bottom-right side of Switch to start converting the WAV files to MP3. They'll be stored in the folder you chose during Step 3.
  6. When the conversion is finished, you can close out of the Conversion completed window.

Other WAV to MP3 Converters

Both WAV and MP3 are popular audio file formats, so there are lots of ways to convert WAV to MP3 that don't involve the Switch program mentioned here.
