How to Connect Spotify to Discord

Discord is a popular free service that lets anyone connect with other users and communicate via text messages or voice chat. In addition to these basic chat features, Discord also supports integration with a wide variety of other services, such as Spotify, to add additional functionality and create a more engaging experience.

Once connected, the native Discord Spotify integration lets you listen to other users’ music at the same time that they are. You can also invite your friends to listen to what you’re listening to. And if you know how to connect Spotify to Discord, you can add even more functionality by letting users activate Spotify playlists within a server.

Instructions in this article apply to the web version of Discord available on the Discord website but they can also be used with the official Discord apps on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS devices.

How to Play Music in Discord With Spotify

Discord features native support for Spotify and doesn’t require the installation of any additional software, bots, or hacks to activate this basic music-listening functionality.

  1. On your computer, open your preferred web browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, Brave, or Microsoft Edge, and go to the official Discord website.

    If you’re not still logged into Discord from a previous session, log in now.

  2. Click the User Settings icon from the lower-left corner of the screen.

  3. From the left menu, click Connections.

  4. Click the Spotify icon.

  5. A small window will pop up. Log into your Spotify account via the Facebook button or by entering your Spotify username and password.

  6. After logging in, the small window should close and Spotify will now appear as a connected service.

  7. Click X in the upper-right corner to return to the main Spotify screen.

  8. After the Discord Spotify connection has been made, the track you’re currently listening to on Spotify will automatically appear on your Discord profile.

    A new option to invite other users to listen to what you’re listening to will also appear within the + button menu to the left of the chat’s text window.

  9. To use this new feature, simply click the + button, click Invite to Listen to Spotify, and then click Send Invite.

You will need a Spotify Premium membership for this share functionality to work. Free and Premium Spotify users can accept your invitations and listen to your music though.

How to Install a Spotify Discord Bot

A bot is kind of like a mini program that needs to be installed onto a main program. In this case, the Groovy bot is out mini program and we're going to install it onto a Discord server.

Once installed, this bot will add extra Spotify functionality to your Discord server that will let members activate certain functions by typing in text commands.

There are numerous Spotify bots for Discord but Groovy is one of the best.

Here's how to connect a Spotify music bot to Discord.

  1. Go to the Groovy website and click Add to Discord.

    Make sure that you’re already logged into Discord on this web browser before clicking that button.

  2. Click Select a Server.

  3. From the dropdown menu, click on the name of the Discord server you want to install the Spotify Discord bot on.

  4. Click Authorize.

  5. Check the I’m not a robot box.

  6. The Groovy Discord Spotify bot will now be immediately installed on your selected Discord server. You can now use it to play songs or other music by typing -play followed by the name of the song.

  7. To import an entire Spotify playlist into your Discord server, open the playlist within the Spotify app, click > Share > Copy Playlist Link, and then paste the copied URL into the chat after -play.
