It can be frustrating to realize you’ve forgotten or lost your Fire Stick’s remote after checking into your hotel room but there’s still a way to control your Amazon streaming stick. It just takes a little bit of work.

This guide will walk you through the setup process for how to control your Amazon Fire TV Stick without its remote by using the Fire TV app, a secondary mobile device, and a custom Wi-Fi hotspot. You’ll also find a variety of alternative solutions plus some basic information on how to use the new setup to eventually connect to the hotel Wi-Fi.

How Do I Connect My Fire Stick to Hotel Wi-Fi Without Remote?

This is what you need to do to connect to your Amazon Fire TV Stick in your hotel room when you’ve forgotten or misplaced its remote.

  1. Download and install the Fire TV app onto an iPhone or iPad or an Android smartphone or tablet.

    The Fire TV app is a completely separate app than the Amazon Prime Video app.

  2. Connect your secondary device to the hotel Wi-Fi network. You can use a Windows or Mac laptop, an iPhone or iPad, or an Android tablet or smartphone.

    You can’t use the same device that has the Fire TV app installed on it.

  3. Now, use your secondary device to create a Wi-Fi hotspot. This essentially allows the laptop, smartphone, or tablet to share its internet connection with nearby devices. Mobile hotspots can be created on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices.

    If you don’t have a second device to create a hotspot with, ask a hotel staff member to help you with one of theirs. Just make sure to explain what you’re using it for and remember to tell them it should only take a few minutes.

  4. If you’ve previously connected your Amazon Fire TV Stick to your device’s mobile hotspot, you can skip this step as it should automatically connect to it.

    If you haven’t, you’ll need to change the name and password of your secondary device’s mobile hotspot to match those of your home Wi-Fi network. Once done, your Fire Stick will think the mobile hotspot is your home network and connect to it.

    You can change your Wi-Fi hotspot’s name and password on the same screen you used to create it. However, if you’re using an iPad or iPhone, you change the hotspot’s name by changing the name of your device. You can change your device name as many times as you like.

  5. Connect the smart device with the Fire TV app on it to the newly renamed hotspot.

  6. Open the Fire TV app. If you've previously connected the Fire TV app and this device to your Fire Stick, you can jump to Step 10. If this is the first time using the Fire TV app, select your Fire Stick from the list of devices.

  7. Your Fire Stick should show a four digit code on your hotel room's TV.

  8. Enter this code into the Fire TV app on your smart device.

  9. You should now be able to use the arrow keys in the Fire TV app to navigate your Fire TV Stick.

  10. Using the Fire TV app to navigate the Fire TV Stick UI, select Settings.

  12. Locate your hotel room's Wi-Fi network and connect to it. If you can't see it, select See All Networks.

    Some hotel Wi-Fi networks just require a password while others may trigger the opening of a website portal that you need to log into with your room number and name. If nothing happens, wait several minutes as the Fire Stick may be trying to open the login portal.

  13. Once your Fire Stick is connected to the hotel Wi-Fi, open the internet settings on your primary device and connect it to the hotel Wi-Fi as well.

    You can now continue to use this device as a remote for your Fire Stick as long as they’re both connected to the hotel Wi-Fi.

  14. On your secondary device, turn off the Wi-Fi hotspot feature.

How Can I Use Fire Stick Without Remotes or Secondary Devices?

If you don’t have a remote or a secondary device to create a mobile hotspot with, you do still have some other options for controlling your Amazon Fire TV Stick.

  • Borrow a device from someone else. As mentioned above, you can always ask a staff member or another hotel guest to help you with their smartphone or tablet.
  • Try the hotel room TV’s remote control. Some remote controls with HDMI-CEC support can actually control Amazon Fire Sticks and other modern devices. Use the arrow buttons on your room’s remote and see if it affects your Fire Stick. If it doesn’t, you may be able to buy a cheap remote with this functionality at a nearby store.
  • Buy a new Fire Stick remote. Amazon’s Fire Stick streaming devices can actually support up to seven connected remotes. This means you can buy a replacement and then connect this new remote to your Fire Stick.
  • Control your Fire Stick with Alexa. Amazon’s Echo devices can be used to control your Fire Stick with Alexa voice commands. Each device will need to be on the same Wi-Fi network however.

How Do I Change the Wi-Fi on My Fire Stick Without the Remote?

Unfortunately, you can’t change your Fire Stick’s Wi-Fi or other internet settings with Alexa voice commands but you can do so with the following methods when you’re without your remote:

  • The Fire TV mobile app. The app can be used as a remote to navigate the Fire Stick UI.
  • A new Fire Stick remote. You can connect up to seven remotes to your Fire Stick.
  • A compatible TV remote. Some remotes with HDMI-CEC functionality can be used to navigate a Fire Stick and change settings.
