The final version of Windows Live Hotmail was released in late 2011. Microsoft replaced Hotmail in 2013 with Outlook.com. If you had a Hotmail address at that time or have set up a new one since then, you can use it to send and receive email at Outlook.com. If you want to delete your Hotmail email address, you have to go to Outlook.com to do it.

Close Your Hotmail Account at Outlook.Com

If you are sure you want to close your account, here's how.

  1. Open Outlook.com and enter your Hotmail login credentials. To permanently close the mail account, you need to close the Microsoft account that uses your Hotmail login credentials.
  2. Go to the Microsoft account closure page.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to verify your identity.
  4. Double-check that the account you are signing into is the Hotmail account. If not, select Sign in with a different Microsoft account. When the screen shows the correct account, click Next.
  5. Read the list and check each item to acknowledge you read it.
  6. Choose a reason you are closing the account in the Select a reason drop-down list.
  7. Click Mark account for closure.

Does Microsoft Keep My Data and My Emails?

When you close the Microsoft account that uses your Hotmail login information, all your email and contacts are deleted from Microsoft's server, and they can't be recovered. If you used your account with other Microsoft services, you can no longer use them.

Your Skype ID and contacts are gone, the files you saved in OneDrive and your Xbox Live data are also gone. Messages sent to your Hotmail email address bounce back to the sender with an error message, so let the people who used your Hotmail email address know how to reach you in the future.

After 60 days, your username can be taken and used by someone else.
