To minimize the dangers of voyaging into your email account while on a public computer, for example, you can have Safari purge all information: its cache, the history of visited sites, what you entered in forms, and more.

Clear Private Data, Empty Caches, and Remove Cookies in Safari

To remove your browsing history across synchronized devices and computers, cookies, caches and other website data from Safari after visiting an email service on the web from, perhaps, a public computer:

  1. Select Safari > Clear History from the menu in Safari.

  2. Select the desired time period—the last hour and today are typically most appropriate—under Clear.

    You can also choose all history, of course, to delete all data.

  3. Click Clear History.

Note that this will remove that data from iCloud and all Safari browsers on other computers and devices as well, if you use iCloud to synchronize browser data.

Clear Data (but Not History) for Specific Sites in Safari

To remove data stored on your computer from particular sites—say, email services:

  1. Select Safari > Preferences from the menu in Safari.

  2. Go to the Privacy tab.

  3. Click Details under Cookies and website data.

  4. Find all sites (by domain name) that store data via cookies, a database, the cache or files.

  5. For each site whose data you want to remove:

    Highlight the site in the list and use the Search field to quickly find sites.

    Click Remove.

  6. Click Done.

  7. Close the Privacy preferences window.

Note that this will not remove the sites from your browsing history. You may want to clear your history in addition to deleting select sites' data.

To delete all history entries, cookies as well as data websites—such as email services—keep on your device in Safari for iOS:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Go to the Safari category.

  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.

  4. Now tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

You can find out which sites keep data on your device—and delete selectively:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Now open the Safari category.

  3. Select Advanced.

  4. Now tap Website Data.

  5. Tap Show All Sites.

To remove cached content, your browsing history, and cookies from Safari after visiting a web-based email service on a public computer:

  1. Select Safari > Reset Safari... (Mac) or Gear Icon > Reset Safari... (Windows) in Safari.

  2. Make sure the following items are checked:

    Clear history

    Remove all webpage preview images

    Empty the cache

    Clear the Downloads window

    Remove all cookies

    Remove saved names and passwords

    Remove other AutoFill form text

  3. Click Reset.
