Yahoo! Mail's redesigned interface is more elegant and powerful than the old, but its customization options remain somewhat limited. While you can't upload your own custom background images (sorry, you still can't use that photo of your dog), you can change the theme and color of the interface.

How to Change the Yahoo! Mail Interface Color

Changing the color of the left-hand navigation bar and other interface elements is a straightforward process:

  1. Hover over the options gear in Yahoo! Mail.

  2. Select Themes from the menu that shows. You'll see photos that the Yahoo! team has preselected for you. Click on one of the images to see how your inbox will appear if you choose it. The large swatch is the background color, and the smaller triangle represents the highlight color. If you'd rather not use a photo or graphic, look for the solid color options at the bottom.

  3. Pick the desired interface theme or color.

  4. Click Save.

How to Change the Yahoo! Mail Classic Interface Color

If you're still using Yahoo! Mail Classic in its default interface, you can change its colors, as well:

  1. Select Options from the Yahoo! Mail Classic navigation bar.

  2. Follow the Colors link under Options.

  3. Highlight the desired color scheme under Select a theme.

  4. Click Save.

How to Change Text Density

Another way to change Mail's appearance is by adjusting the text density—how tightly the subject lines are packed on the screen:

  1. Hover your mouse over the gear icon.

  2. Choose Settings > Viewing email from the pop-up window.

  3. From the options that appear, choose Message list density.

  4. Click Save.
