Changing the Look and Feel of Opera

This tutorial was last updated on November 25, 2015 and is only intended for users running the Opera Web browser on Windows or Mac OS X operating systems.

Our routines can get a bit mundane, and that can include surfing the 'net. Sometimes new furniture, a new wardrobe, or a fresh coat of paint can spruce things up and reinvigorate your daily grind. The same can be said for your browser, as giving it a new look can be just what the Web doctor ordered.

With just a few clicks of the mouse, Opera can take on a completely different appearance. Adding and changing themes in Opera is a breeze, and this tutorial will make you an expert in no time. First, open your Opera browser.

Windows users: Click on the Opera menu button, located in the upper left hand corner of your browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, select the Themes option.

Mac users: Click on View in your Opera menu, located at the top of your screen. When the drop-down menu appears, select the Show Themes option.

Opera's Themes interface should now be visible in a new tab, as shown in the example above, containing the following options.

  • Search themes: From this edit field you have the ability to search through available themes via your choice of keywords.
  • Default themes: Not available on all operating systems, selecting this option displays each of the themes that come preinstalled with the browser. To activate any of these default looks immediately, simply click on its respective name or preview image.
  • My themes: Clicking on this option displays all themes that you've installed from Opera's gallery (see Get more themes below).
  • Create your theme: In addition to offering a bounty of premade browser skins, Opera also allows you to create your own by uploading a custom image, specifying a name and choosing an alignment position for said image.
  • Get more themes: Selecting this option takes you to the Themes section of the Opera add-ons website. A large collection of attractive browser skins can be found here, each with their own unique look. Accompanying each theme is a preview, versioning and download statistics, as well as user reviews. To install one of these themes, first click on its name or preview image from the main page. Next, click on the green and white Add to Opera button. The installation process, which typically takes less than 30 seconds depending on your connection speed, will now begin. Once complete, this button will transform into an icon that reads Installed and a new Opera window will open with your new theme already activated.
  • Go to start page: Clicking on this link returns you to Opera's start page, which is the Speed Dial window by default.
